I have managed a long trip a year for the last few years. For a the third time I have headed south......good weather, family visits, food.....cheap wine....Alps......all sorts of good reasons I would say.

For my next escapade.....I would like to head up north for a change of scenery. Been toying with the idea of Scotland and beyond, Orkney Islands, or another area that really draws me near is Ireland. Ideally the trip would last just over a week, without the long slogs up and down motorways if possible and with plenty of winding roads. Obviously if it was Scotland, I would not want to hang around down south for too long.

I have almost a year to plan, so no hurry but, any comments, tips, or places to see would be most welcome. I already know about the lovely weather one can expect but I am sure the beauty of these two countries far outweigh the draws back of a bit of rain......or lots of it as the case might be....:)

Cheers......and I hope this is the right forum for it.......if not Admin please "chastise" away.......grazie!!

Well if you could make it to the national we can have a chat plus the Scottish lot will be there too to answer most of your questions over a wee dram

Whatever route you try and take its a long way to the good bits of Scotland from down south. Is it a week of travelling around Scotland plus a couple of days either side for the slog up north or you want to do it all in a week? A day up or down is possible (ask Vader he has done twice that I know of) but it's 600 miles from say Ullapool down to the Home Counties.

As others have said lots of advice on here and other forums. Just ask a couple of specifics. There will be a thread on my trip to shetland Orkney from about 3 years ago on here somewhere (might be on xrv actually).

Tony,

I would be only too happy to give you some advice over a wee dram.
It's a big country, some good bits, some not so good, just depends on whatever rocks your boat.

Glad to be of help in above :D

Thank you all for the good tips......and thanks Vader for the warning :) obviously you did not take your own advice seriously lol

Been up to Scotland camping with the family and I do not recall any "not so good bits" it was a fab experience......apart from midges and rain :)

Austin thanks to you too, plenty of info everywhere to go by at this stage........I have to say I feel drawn to the dark side at the moment....the one with the creamy bit on top! Anyway plenty of time and lunch breaks to surf the net.

Thank you all!

Did Scotland last September, mix of bunkhouses and camping. Been said before but Scotland as great roads and stunning scenery. Only one bad day of rain ( isle of Skye). Would definitely going, you won't be disappointed.
Inveraray bunkhouse well worth a visit NOT.

Come on Andy
Inveraray was one of the highlights of the trip, we'll never forget it that's for sure [emoji23]

We'll have to do it all again with the girls next time [emoji106]

Skye is a strange place, worked there many a time.
Seen four seasons in one day plenty times.

When it's good weather it's stunning, in bad weather, it's just horrid :(
Maybe it's because I had to work in,shall we say inclement weather ?

Would still recommend it though especially the top end --- Staffin, Kilmuir , the Quirang
