Some photo’s from a great day out . . . . .

Austins bike and the beach wot we walked

In the distance you can just make out the range buildings on top of the hill

The boat / ship wot was throwing shells at the poor, defenceless ISO container

Everyone duck . . . . .

How Close?

Ahhhh, Danish

Great to see Austin so far north - well done that man for an epic ride up . . . .to be followed by a sort of relaxed ride south. Till April 2015 then :thumbsupanim:

Looks like a great day out and even the weather was good. Stunning location, I've walked Balnakiel Bay a few times, been out to the range control building and even got out to Cape Wrath once (when they weren't bombing lol!), absolutely love it up there and will definitely try to join you if there's a re-run next year.
And top marks to Austin, that's no short journey for a day out :eekicon: But what a day out!

Twas indeed a grand day out, with several un-expected events occuring - the Typhoon lobbing a laser guided bomb was a first for me. And then the Danes put on an impromptu flying display with their little blue airborne taxi :D

The weather gods did indeed smile on us once we had reached Durness. Eldest & I penertrated several real deluges on the way north, and again on the way home in the afternoon/evening. Still didn't damped the spirits or reduce the smile size :thumbsupanim:

Joint Warrior takes place twice a year - April & October - so there is scope for most to fit in a visit. And seeing as both take place before & after the main tourist season, the roads are virtually free of hire car drivers (not including the visiting forces taking part in the excercise of course :D )

Mr W has, I think, already placed an electronic book mark into the pages marked "April 2015" in his tapatalk-phone-thingmajig

My story. Pics later.

It was truly a great day out. I started at 3pm Thursday and blitzed 300 miles in pi$$ing rain to the Tipsy Laird hostel in Kingussie (recommended - esp the food). Then 150 miles to Durness to meet SteveT and his son Neil at the beach at Balnakiel next to Durness.

The high tide meant there was no firm sand to ride across the beach and a pre walk of the soft stuff all chewed up by F-off big army trucks confirmed that a 2.5m walk in biking kit and warm sun was needed. Luckily a kind hearted aide to the Sarg in charge picked us up about half way.

We then got briefed on where to stand so we were out the way but could see proceedings. Two RAF typhoons soon made their presence felt with swooping runs at the target island but no action as a Danish frigate was lining up for some ship to shore gunnery. Loud booms indicated the shots were underway but you had to watch carefully. A puff of smoke from the ships guns indicated a shell was on its way then it was a case of getting the binoculars on the targets (ISO containers on land) to watch for the explosions. :). A couple of seconds later it was Boom from the firing then boom from the explosion. Single shots soon turned into double, then treble and finally quadrupole salvos. Great stuff.

As soon as the frigate turned off target the background drone of the Typhoons changed tone and we could see them on a bombing run from far out at sea. Steve and I both had the binoculars on them as the lead plane dropped a 2000lb laser guided paveway bomb. We watched it all the way down jinking and swerving as it followed the laser down to a bullseye on the "nose" of the island. Absolutely awesome to watch even from about 5km.

The typhoons bugged out to be replaced by a Tornado GR4 and we were warned that it was on a "show of force run" from the north. The tornado passed overhead about 100' at super speed. I have a video I will post later but couldn't keep up as it passed literally above me. The ground shook.

There was more ship to shore gunnery in the afternoon.

Finally we got warned to squat down as a Lynx helicopter from the frigate was about to land on the helipad about 50' from us. Brill.

A long walk back to the bikes and SteveT and son went back to Elgin while I tried find somewhere for the night in Durness.

My target accommodation - The Lazy Crofter bunkhouse - was full of American military so I ended up in the last room in the Wild Orchid B&b. very nice it is too, and for sale if anyone is looking for a lifestyle change. Saturday and I had a late start, on account of having the full guided tour of the B&B and a bit of a hard sell from the current owner. Then a run down past Altnarrah to Inverness and the very helpful Mitchell's motorcycles who replaced a broken pinlock rivet in my visor for free and gave me a pack of spares and a key ring. Then on down through Moray, Speyside, the Lecht, Braemar, Glenshee to Pitlochry backpackers hostel - a proper old fashioned hostel but I think I doubled the average ago when I registered. 250 miles Home tomorrow.
:(

It's been a fab trip and I have now had my dose of Scottish biking for 2014.

Some pics of my long weekend away....

the beach what we didnt ride across

The target for the RAF. The laser guided bomb we saw landed smack on the nose of the island on the right in the pic. This is at 20x zoom and is about 5 miles away. The fragmentation from the bomb must have scattered over a 300metre radius and the whole island was lost in the the smoke.

incoming Lynx

and off she goes

Sango Sands, Durness

Looking south down Loch Eriboll to the east of Durness

Ben Loyal and some sunshine

Wow, looked amazing. How did you know they would be bombing that weekend? Is it advertised anywhere.

And whilst we are on the subject, do they do bombing runs any where else?

Back in my OTC days I went to the fire display demo (somewhere down South). It was a cracking day and something Id like to see again. We had a demo of virtually everything in the British forces and beyond blowing various things up.

and sod the walking.....you were on Adventure bikes. I would have opted for the sand ride!

It's a twice yearly exercise for two weeks in April and October involving several European and USA forces. SteveT is the man as, in his words, he "used to be associated with the goings on". Anyway he knows the flight Sarg in charge so we got briefed on what was expected but the don't do so much at the weekend to keep the locals happy. Anyone can walk to Faraid head and would have a half decent view of proceedings, but mot ad good as from inside the mod compound like we were :).

Sand/ beach yes mike you would probably have had a go but it was +6" of well chewed up light sandy loamy stuff with tyre tracks up to 12" deep, until the tide went out. While waiting for steveT to arrive the several army types that went over in 4x4 hilux's and the like were struggling. An army 4x4 had got stuck the previous day. We judged it hopeless.

Tempting very tempting. We are on the Isle of Skye for Easter on the bike (early start in the morning) and the new retirement budget may not stretch to a another trip just a few days afterwards. But, we will see. Camping at Durness sounds quite attractive.

You never know, you may see me over that way. Planned to pop out west today, but rain out west versus sunshine to the east sorted any plans I had :(

Might see you on the road this weekend :thumbsupanim:

That would be great Steve. We are staying at Dun Flodigarry hostel at the north end of the island but will be out and about on Saturday and Sunday. Ring or text me if you are heading over. I know Rick can't come out to play as he is working.

We are currently in the cafe at Eilian Donan castle after a wet 300+ miles so far. Actually it wasn't all wet. You know that long left hander as you climb onto Rannoch Moor (going north), the offside wheel track, well that was dry. It's brightening up now so hopefully we will see some more dry roads.

Well, I'm heading for the range tomorrow.

Not able to get to the control due to firing from that location - just off the phone to "my man" and I could hardly hear him for gun fire :thumbsupanim: , but going up anyway and seeing how things pan out.

Possibly leaving tonight and wild camping somewhere north, then up and away early doors and head for the range. High tide seems likely to prevent any wheeled excursion up to the range first thing tomorrow morning, but I'll see how the top level of sand is sitting . . . . . and watch the 4x4's cross over before making any silly decisions :D

Well, having loaded the boxes, then loaded the bike, I trundled off to fill the little bike, via a twisty route, as I've never ridden this thing fully loaded up. Bike feels fine, but by feck is my back sore. No real idea why it's giving me gyp, but it is!

I'll sleep on it :D and decide in the twilight of tomorrow morning
