Royal Enfield are apparently close to finalising their new "Adventure" bike - the Himalayan.

Free from all the bells and whistles that the big manufacturers deem necessary to fit to their own "adventure" bikes, the Himalayan looks like it's going back to basics.

Full story from visordown, but the essence is a bike powered by an air-cooled single, believed to be around 410cc and making about 28bhp, which is bolted to a simple steel frame, it’s not a high-performance machine. But it does look like an immensely practical one, with a design that values simplicity above all else. Best guess on price - about £3,500.

any idea about the weight?

Not yet. But it can't be much.

Edit: But at a guess - a damn sight less than the new Africa Twin. ;)

Exhaust is a bit low for water crossings.

I wonder if they are going to retain the camouflage style paint job?

And more details from visordown.

For once, an adventure bike that is - probably - going to be pretty much ideal for real round-the-world adventures. It won't sell, of course, because the engine is less than 1200cc! ;)

. Agreed for UK and Europe. It will sell in the thousands in India, elsewhere in Asia and Africa though.

Most people either want a "do it all bike" or a highly specialist bike. This doesn't fit either for bikers in the west, but for the rest of the world it could be the best do it all bike there is.

Looks like Steve T did the paint job (but his was probably better quality)!

The new Royal Enfield Himalayan in action -

That back suspension would need stiffening up a LOT, with..erm... "western" builds riding it, it was completely bottoming out on those jumps with the tiny test riders on.

I have to admit that ugly fecker is beginning to grow on me. If I had space for two bikes, it might sit alongside a Jap bike. Am I  ?

I really like the look of that, would have to depend on the ride height for me ( short arse ).
Any idea on launch date?
P.S
Price to be released around March. Ride height is 800mm.

Was at the Royal Dublin Society (otherwise known as the RDS) Motorcycle and Scooter show last Sunday and came across an example of the soon to be released Royal Enfield Himalayan -

Looks like a reasonably well screwed together motorcycle. Should be available around June, apparently.
