A colleague has bought a bike recently. Fazer 600, for the commute. He complained that the headlight was a bit naff, asked if I could have a look. Sure.

Yep, the little metal cover thingummy over the dipped beam light bulb was hanging down, blocking the top part of the light pattern, aka most of the dipped beam. Seems a plastic tab of some kind has broken off causing the thing to be loose, but it looked like it could be bodged by wedging something in there... So a wee twig and a bit of leatherman action later, it's all back together working properly. :D

Always nice to scratch the bodging itch. ;)

The problem is when you buy a secondhand bike you have to put up with previous owner's bodges, and my F650 has one or two of them - oh yes!

GO on then.. What annoying or brilliant bodges have folks found on bikes they have bought?

Nothing untoward with bikes, but much of the floor in a Morris Oxford estate I bought (admittedly for only £10) was a flattened out gallon can of Castrol GTX, held in with a couple of pop rivets. OK until you hit a puddle, when it acted as a water scoop, filling up the passenger footwell :D

You know the thread where I asked for help in putting a Tom Tom on my bike? Well, I've started to look at wiring in the 12v to 5v inline ebay transformer which you suggested I buy (for when it arrives from China) and I have uncovered a bird's nest soup of wiring all fixed into the battery live side with the popular wrap-around-and-cover-in-insulting-tape type bodge. I can't for the life of me see where the wiring goes or what it powers, as there don't seem to be any electrically powered accessories so I will have to disconnect it all and see what doesn't work anymore.

Granted this little twig is by no means a permanent fix, if only because it'll probably fail/fall out soon enough. :)

But it was a nice way to verify we'd found the problem.

Exactly. Find the problem first and then fix it.

It's amazing the "fixes" that are applied without confirming what the actual problem is in the first place.

On that subject. I wonder how Whealie is getting on fixing that wee Yamaha?

(once that is he has fixed the hire van)

Just hope the birds aren't nest-building .... they're always on the lookout for twigs :)

My alp has a welded drive sprocket, I'm told that's quite common, they made a decent job of it but in doing so made it a pain to do anything with...

Not that common really and definitely a PITA afterwards. Cause is not using an oem sprocket. Only viable long term fix is to replace, which AFAIK is an engine out a strip down job.

A garage local to me has said it was down to the chain tension not being right?
I suppose there can be a few causes... Yeah, it's a full stripdown I've just priced all the genuine parts I'd need, I.e full seals and gaskets and the shaft, which comes to £340 :-0
I know I could get away with just the main ones which would work out quite a bit cheaper though.

Here's my AT, and yes - there is a split link in the chain, and no, I'm not concerned ;)

I'll see how I feel at the start of the bad weather - if the sprocket's still got life in it then, all good...

I could hammer / cold chis it off and weld a new one on, buy an engine off of Ebay and fit it, or bite the bullet and fit a new output shaft (I have a used one in pretty good shape).

Let us know how you get on with what you do with yours mate :)

I meant not that common on Transalps. And yeah, running a chain too tight won't help at all.
