My snap on toolbox had a sticker on the lid that said "I make my living with Snap On tools so please do not ask to borrow them".
A long time ago I formed the view that I would only lend kit to like minded people. That means people who have spent good money on tools but have a one off neeed for a particular item that is not in thir toolkit. I generaly find that they appreciate and look after it.
Its the people who dont even bother to buy any basic tools, spend their money on other things and almost expect you to let them use your kit, bought with hard earned cash to give them free run.
A recent example that still irks was a neibours request to borrow my wheelbarrow. Its quite old, but still clean and sound. It came back caked in concrete :( no hint of an apology.

I agree 100% with everything said here.

At short notice, I loaned my niece a tent to go on a camping trip in Spain. I didn't know she would take it to a festival and never bring it back! There was nothing with it, she said once the festival was over, she couldn't be bothered to lug it around with her backpack.
When I said "that was a £40 tent!" her response was "oh, at least it wasn't expensive"
Did I get a replacement?
Did I get any money?
Apparently she was 'very sorry' and that was enough :(

I'd send the person who borrowed the sleeping bag a link to an online shop & kindly ask her to keep the cheap replacement

Niece - so she's your sibling's daughter. What did sibling say?

Families eh? Who'd 'ave 'em?

That would really piss me off.

I recently lent a guy at work my chain tool. He is a mechanic in the workshop so I know he knows how to use it, however I still explained. In the end I helped him do the job while I was there.

I don't lend any of my tools out. They cost a fortune and if someone wants to borrow something then I will do the job for them myself. I'm very anal when it comes to looking after stuff.

I also hate the lending thing

Not in the same vein, but I lent my "special Forestry key " to a guy in the pub, you know the ones -- open any forestry gate in Scotland. I had a few beers and I can't remember who I gave it to. Bloody annoying as they are like hen's teeth, illegal to get a copy made etc etc.

Suffice to say that it was obviously someone I knew which is even more annoying.
Anyways, that was some time ago and the forestry now use numbered digit padlocks in some areas

And I know the sequence ;) :D

yes, my sister's daughter - she thought it was a 'spare' tent & it didn't matter if it wasn't returned & no, she didn't offer to refund me - had I asked it would have created a rift...
