Rear felt a bit spongy as I overtook a classic sports car on the NC500, bugger, pulled in sharpish to find my rear tyre flat.
Slime compressor linked up , bottled water soon found the cause of my dilemma, a bloody nail 1/2 in
Anyways, gouged it out, plug set out and we're off, well almost.

Still air escaping, although not as bad.
Stuck another plug in, still the same.
Oh well, carried on checking every half hour and topping up with air, made it home in time for tea.

What is the general consensus on these plugs ? will they do the business ? or is it because it was wrongly fitted (for I am a ham fisted Teuchter ?? ) They can only go in one way , right ??

Looks like I will be ordering up a new tyre :(

John, it's possible the nail tore up some cords on the inside of the tyre in an area larger than the plug. No way to tell until you remove the tyre but it would be wise to order a new one anyway.

Looks a good run out John, it'd be a cracking camp spot too if the weather was half decent.
As for the tyre.... replace it asap (then send the old one to me foc, as long as it's less that 1/2 worn :) )

Similar puncture a little while ago. The third try with a plug was mostly holding it up but when I was inspecting it closely there were loads of tiny split wires that would have been cutting and damaging the plug on the way in and preventing a really good seal too. I did several hundred miles on the tyre before I decided I really couldn't trust it on a journey of any length and it needed a top up every time I used the bike.

I have however plugged a tyre before that held for the rest of the life of the tyre. I think it just depends where on the tyre it is (the more central the better as there is less flex) and how much damage to the tyre's structure the nail and the reaming for the plug has done. If it aint holding then its probably time to get either a professional repair or replacement tyre.

Speak t J about plugging front tyres:rolleyes2::rolleyes2::rolleyes2:
I remember one with 7 plugs but he would no way give it up as it had too much milage left.:rolleyes2::iconmrgreen:
Most i done is 16000 miles on a plugged front Heidi Scout. Others joined along the way but had no problems at all.
Of course its not a surprise as i always stick to local speedlimits or below:cool2::cool2:

Pete,

Are you sure that Boyo isn't related to Phil ?? :D

I dunno, if it was done professionally, I would think about it, don't mind the back tyre , but would be twitchy about the fronts.
Certainly gave me an arse twitching moment on Sunday

Thanks everyone, going to take it to my local dealers sometime this week ( they are going to say it's fekked aren't they ? ) :( Just checked it tonight --- flat as the proverbial pancake.
I'll make a decision once the guys look at it.

I've done who knows how many miles on a rear with a nail still in it. Only found the stupid thing when the tyre got replaced...

And there's the time I found a nail late one evening in the middle of nowhere, pulled it out, watched the tyre go flat and thought oh bollocks I've got no patch kit and a ferry to catch tomorrow. So stuck the nail back in, pumped it up and went to sleep. Next morning it still held air, so rode 10 miles on it to the nearest place that would put a plug in...

Do stupid shit like that and I finally get done in by a little oopsie accident where some modern car outbrakes me? No fair. :D

Well, took the tyre to the fitter, and considering the mileage, about 5k miles, I just bought another.
Didn't fancy having any issues on the way to the National.
By the time I would have got back, it would have been on the limit anyway :(

These Highland roads are bad on tyres :(
