I know Dave Silver for Honda spares but is there a good supplier for Yamaha spares (old bikes - I mean really old bikes)?

Nope. Need a rectifier and had to order it from Wemoto so no same day delivery option and I had a meeting in London so could not just ride down and collect it. Have postponed Molly's CBT until it is all back up and running. Foolishly bought a Motoblatt battery off ebay advertised as for the DT50 and correct year - but , of course, Motoblatt don't make a battery for 32-year old 6v bike, so it arrived the wrong size and won't fit in the space. And my battery charger is only 12v too, so suddenly it's a new battery and a new charger and a rectifier...... :eekicon:

I've been through Wemoto. The DT50 I have has had the LHS handlebar switch gear replaced with new but not the RHS (throttle, kill switch light switch) and it is 32 years old, pitted, rusty on the inside and some wires have been cut into etc. If someone sells a new one, I'd buy it.

Assuming its magneto ignition It will still start and run without a rectifier fitted even with a flat battery. I'm not suggesting Molly uses it but you should be able to get it going. You may well have just found something that was about to fail

Well that suggest another problem then because there was no way it was starting. I even tried bump starting. I suspect the kill switch, but I cannot fathom how it works as only one wire runs to it.

It might be that the kill switch either connects, or disconnects, the one wire to earth (via the handlebars). Bit of an odd way to do it mind as there would have to be an earth connection from the forks to the frame or the current would go through the head bearings - not good.

Yes it will just be earthing the magneto output. As will the ignition switch when in the off position.

Fowlers don't do Yamaha.

Well, that's a bit weird as it's the second manufacturer they list after Honda. Very strange.

Are we looking at the same Fowlers? No Yamaha listed in the parts section either in the list on the left of logos or in the Search by specifying your bike.

Another option is Yuniparts. Google them as they dont have a web site. They get old Yam bits re manufactured and specialise in xt500s. Again I can call in on them, they are minutes from me and they always have interesting kit in there.

I imagine the kill switch will connect to "earth" - hence the single wire. Fairly normal with magneto systems, it effectively electrically stops the contact breaker breaking, so no more sparks! It also means that, if that "cut-out" wire connects to "earth" anywhere, if its insulation has failed, perhaps near the steering head, again there'll be no sparks :(
The best of luck with it !

Not sure what happened there ... I've just spotted Boris's reply, and some others... weren't there 5 minutes ago, honest!

I will check my bike charger, I cannot remember if it has 6 volt switch on it. Have you replaced the spark plug?
