I just replied to a thread on ABR where someone asked the question "has anyone done the Scottish islands" which reminded of a little list I was keeping of things people write on forums that really irritate..,..
1. I am going to "do" [a country]. Do what to it??? Fiddle it, beat it up or what. It's a symptom of the bucket list mentality - "done that, ticked it off the list, next....". (See slso #3). If you are going to go there then just say so and if you think by visiting once you have somehow done all there is to do there then you clearly know nothing about the place you are going to.
2. Recommend me [a thing]. Bad lazy grammar with the same laziness and confusion over lend and borrow. And why oh why do people feel the need to ask about stuff. Do the research, go to a shop and have confidence in your own judgement instead of getting what someone else thinks is good.
3. "Its on my Bucket list". Do people really have lists of things to do or achieve in a lifetime. If you do, I am sorry but I think you are a saddo. And linked to this.....
4. Someone makes a genuine enquiry about a specific place or country and people reply only to say something like "never been but I would love to go" or "went there once stayed at xyz place, great time, sorry can't help". Well yes, most of us want to go somewhere we haven't been before; and there's no need to show off about your travels: the guy who asked is there too.
5. Inverted snobbery. I know we all like a good deal but really cheap stuff is cheap for reason - it's either crap or a rip off copy. Equally there's some horrendously over priced crap out there. Nobody boasts about the price of their klim jacket (although the boast is there in the mere mention of it) so why boast about the cheapness of your unheard of brand that will be in the bin in a few months.
6. "Went to the shops the other day" rather than "I went to the shops" or "my wife went to the shops". It's laziness and I even see it in formal documents at work (or did when I worked
and I know I am probably guilty of all of it so don't go quoting me from some old forum posts. I am allowed to irritate myself too, as I tell my wife frequently.
