If you're thinking of using this camp site for your first few days honfleur is the other way from Calais

in Pete's post he said the latter part of the trip is Ypres way, hence why I put this site up

excellent, when we going to pick dates?
Dates are in the first post. I will stick to them as these where the dates we talked about when I had that chat with the original people :thumbsupanim:

Given that I was one of the original people... ;)

I'm certainly interested, but things are changing so fast at the moment that I can't promise anything. :(

I've just checked and the 25th-31st May is half term in Wales.

For those with children in school it may be worth checking.

Oh and it's bank holiday week so crossing operators will be charging premium prices.

Nope Eurotunnel shows normal prices for that time. £72 return which is what I paid in January too

Eurotunnel are pretty good tbh. They don't seem to hike the prices up and are quite flexible with times if you turn up early or late.

Never had an issue with them and I've crossed with them loads of times.

P&O however..... Yes they can work out cheaper but the crossing is usually shite, no where to sit etc. I usually booked the VIP lounge as its only a few quid, guaranteed seat, free tea and coffee and usually no screaming kids, however if they shut this for whatever reason, they don't tell you in advance and you can't get a refund.

Last time they did this, they informed me that it was always closed on a Sunday between these times... So why did you take the booking you fekin losers....... And still they wouldn't refund me later as 'we have no way of knowing if you did use this sir'..... You were fekin shut!!!!!!!

Needless to say, I haven't and won't use them now.

Rant over........

So what's the plan? WW1 sites first and then Normandy?. . . . . . . It's also most schools half term I believe.

Well that's me out then. I do 'child rearing' during half terms - the previous week, or the following one???

Half-term child rearing and puppy sitting now sub-contracted, so I'm back on again. I'll skip the Normandy bit and join up when the rest of youse arrive in the Ypres area as I'm interested in visiting Lijssenthoek Cemetery where my Great Uncle is buried, and I believe Traveller has a relative buried here too? Also there are very well preserved bunkers and trenches at nearby Kemmel which is off the normal tourist trail. I have found the name of a local Belgian licensed WW1 battlefield guide who can give us a (private tailor-made) half day tour of the Messines Ridge and Ypres Salient. If that's of interest I'll find out more and post details.

Eurotunnel now showing £52 return for bike + 1 during that week for morning or late afternoon, £79 anytime flexi saver. You don't get sea sick and if the water comes in half way across you'll get a better understanding of the scene in Das Boot when U96 ran aground when trying to get through the Straights of Gibralter.

I'm whiling away a rather tedious Christmas - New Year interval with starting to plan for the trip to France/Belgium in May and see that My Ferry prices are about the cheapest. Except they are adding £5 each way for '1x EU Ultra-low sulphur fuel surcharge' - WTF is all that about? Jeez no wonder 55% of the British population want to leave the frigging :finger: EU

New EU rules require them to use low sulphur fuel to reduce their carbon emissions. Still bloody cheaper than P&O from Hull so swallow it and enjoy the trip [FACE WITH TEARS OF JOY]

Eurotunnel is the same price as the ferry now

Are you sure it's not to reduce their sulphur emissions?!

You misunderstand the modern environmental movement, Phil. Words don't have meanings as such, it's buzzwords all the way down, carbon is the new Bad Thing, so everything bad is carbon. Nevermind that the thing they're usually referring to when they say "carbon" this and that has a few pesky oxygen atoms that nobody seems to remember, ever.
