National 2018 suggestion

Guys,

There is no easy way to say this.
Our good friend Geoff is seriously ill just now.
I propose we hold this year's National at Geoff's favourite camp site at Achiltibuie.
You will be aware that Steve and I did a recce last weekend and all is in place.

Steve will post some pics later on and we'll work out dates in due course, I'm not in a good place just now.
I'm not going anywhere else for the National this year other than Achiltibuie.

Really sorry to hear about Geoff!

As much as I'd love to join, it's too far for me to combine with work & family obligations.

I'd just received a quote from a campsite in the Ardennes, but we can leave that for 2019.

As John has already mentioned, he & I went a wandering in a westerly direction on the weekend, with the aim of gaining permission to hold a gathering of ner-do-wells on bikes at a remote campsite.

So remote that Mr Lowflyer couldn’t even find the place, even though it’ s on his preverbal door step! Having a semi competent navigator :thumbsupanim: with him on the weekend, we managed to find the camp site.

Getting to Achiltibui was interesting, as John was leading . Normally, a Sunday ride out with John rarely lasts longer than 3 hours, what with him having to get home to do the dishes/cut the grass /wash the cars etc. etc. etc.

So imagine my surprise when I find myself hoooning up one of the luverly single track roads that bisect this end of the island, skirting along the side of Loch Shin, having zoomed past the turning for Ullapool o_O

We did stop along this stretch of road for John to empty his girly sized bladder :worthlesswithoutpics: and once that little chore was out of the way, he calmly asks me if I’ve got enough fuel! We are in the middle of the Highlands and now he asks! Fortunately, due in no small part to Johns leisurely riding pace :ride:, I still had enough fuel to get me to Ullapool as long as we took the next left . . . . . . which was Laxford Bridge.

We did, fortunately, take the next left :p, so onwards we bimbled, south this time, with the destination in Johns head set as Achiltibuie. Traffic was light enough to make for an interesting ride all the way to the destination. Even had an ambulance escort into Achiltibuie . . . . once it had got out of our way :D.

. . .we surveyed the campsite itself.

John had a chat with the man and gained us an “OK” for a group gathering.

As John has already mentioned, this place is Geoffs favourite campsite in Scotland, and I have to say, he has very good taste does our Geoff :thumbsupanim:

It has a pub/restaurant over-looking the site, with the afore mentioned veranda, so plenty of lubrication should be available, with solids also there for those that partake.

I have no idea where the nearest shop is, so coming prepared, as every big trail rider always is, is essential.

If you have any questions about the roads in the area, look at a paper map or try out google maps. The roads are ace :respect13:

Hoping to meet up with as many of you that can make it.

Looks a great place. Is it better to go earlier than September? Make it a special summer meet?

The campsite I’ve used at Achilitbuie closed some years ago, but the area is stunning and that campsite looks okay! I might be up for this if all the star align.

Sorry to hear Geoff’s not good again. Fingers crossed he makes a recovery :ride:
