I was lucky enough to be given this oilskin/wax jacket yesterday.
Fits perfect and in good condition but does need a dam good clean, so over
the next couple of weeks ( what is there to lose ) I will give it a go
and see how I get on.

I know its not a Barbour jacket, but Barbour do a great re-waxing service at a really competetive price.

Just thought I'd mention it :D

I’ve cleaned and relaxed several barbours over the years. Wash in cold water only. No soap or anything. Just soak it and rub or lightly scrub any persistent dirt. You won’t get it all though.

Drip and air dry. It might take a day or two. Then warm it up - airing cupboard sort of thing or waft a hair drier at it got 10 minutes. This is the time to apply the wax. Warm the wax - a bit more than room temp but only so it’s soft not runny. Apply thinly - brush or cloth and spread it out evenly across the material. A hair drier wafted at it keeps everything warm and helps the wax spread and get absorbed into the cotton. You are aiming for a smooth dry matt finish. Too shiny and you’ve too much wax, too dull probably not enough. A bit less is better than a bit too much though. Hang somewhere warm for a day or two to let it all settle in. Check for any dry areas and top up as needed.

you’ll need to do it again in a few months depending on how much you wear it and what you do in it. The wax basically just rubs off.
