1st 2022 Run out to Ullapool

Got a new neighbour recently and he just happens to ride a F800GS . . .the Adventure version.

Went for a blat on Saturday with him, during which no pictures were taken cos it was Baltic. After the ride I happened to mention that I was thinking of taking a run out to Ullapool during the week. He fair jumped at the chance of a run out . . . so today we did just that.

Took in some roads less travelled, introducing him to some locations he’d not visited before – he’s lived in the and around the area for nearly 20 years – on the way too Ullapool.

1st real stop was the café at the start of the Strui road, now being run by the community after the local oil/petrol selling company gave the place up when C19 hit in 2020. Reasonable prices and good grub – well recommended.

Over the Strui, stopping for a photie at the viewpoint looking north to Bonar Bridge.

Onwards, past the Falls of Shin and onto the road to Ullapool, taking in a few bits off the tar, just so the man knew where he could go play in the future.

Favourite place for a stop and a breather for me is the Knockan Crag visitor attraction.

Once the view had been consumed we rode onto and through Ullapool as time was getting on, what with all the sight seeing.

Just for info for anyone heading this way in the future, try and avoid the fuel station in Ullapool. The profiteering, robbing G1Ts had priced the unleaded at 20p per litre more than the dearest fuel seen on the ride to get there. 20 fecking pence fer fecks sake. Wish they had some competition in the town to make them think twice about their pricing policy, which is, I think, “take their money while you can”!

Spirited run back to Inverness along the main road into a fierce headwind, then more back roads to get us back to the village after nearly 8 hours of riding and site seeing and a little over 270 miles :motorcycle:

Is that Skiach services Steve ? had many a good meal in there in the past , not been up that way for many years now though , Used to love driving over Struie on the way to Scrabster and taking in the view , then they built the Dornoch bridge and we had no excuse to go up there, Still used it to get to Bonar Bridge when going to KLB though , is the old wooden AA box still there just outside Bonar bridge ?

Yep, the Skiach as was, now being run by the community. Not sure where any AA box might be found Mervin! Can't say I've noticed one when up that way. Maybe not looking in th right place o_O

Nice one Steve,

You are right about the filling station at Ullapool.
They've been "at it " for years, bloody disgrace.
I would have thought that they might wise up once the garages up the road offered 24hr service but apparently not.
TBH, it's a perfect location for catching the tourist trade

The community cafe seems to be doing well every time I pass. Good grub, good prices -- what's not to like ??

Ah good to hear its still there, saw one sold at auction a few years ago it made good money about £3000 i think and the same for an AA bike and side car that went with it and a shop dummy in an original AA uniform went for strong money to the same buyer
