Battening down for storm Ophelia

Looks like we're in for a bit of a blow - Schools and colleges to close over Storm Ophelia

Moved anything in the garden that might get blown around to the back of the boiler shed where it's as protected as it could be. Actually it's a really sheltered spot just there.

We'll wait and see what transpires...........

This post could be useless with out photos of wanton destruction, trees turned over, cars crushed, people buried up to their neck in potatoes. Good luck. Hopefully a storm in a tea cup.

I would go hide yourselves in the back of the boiler shed too , but do remember where you put yourself you wouldn't want to wait a week until you find where you are hiding. Good luck, and yes we do need pics and video too if you could oblige.

edit....Exactly 30 years ago during big storm of '87 I had very nice red BMW R80ST which lived outside on our path under a green canvas cover. At about midnight I got up and took the cover off after hearing it flapping, at about 4am I was convinced I heard the bike fall over so went outside in my pants to investigate (tbh I had thought I would just leave it lying down) to find the bike had pivoted around on its centre standlike a weather vane through about 45 degrees and was pointing nicely into the wind.

Good grief - the whole country's on a Red weather warning.

The Uni's closed tomorrow, so Rachel has the day off. We can get some more packing done. Hopefully.

Things are eerily quiet at the moment - the calm before the storm. We're not due to get blasted until nearer lunchtime.

Here's a few webcam links -

Salthill - about 2 miles from the house. The link is down. Probably because it's too busy.

Mace Head - University weather station way out west.

Bundoran Web Shop surf cam - not too far from where we're hoping to move to.

Hope you're safe mate, sounds like it's going to be rough.

Amazingly, we here in Galway appear to have got away with it. The rest of the country doesn't seem to have faired so well.

No amazing photos or video from me, I'm afraid. There appears to be plenty online from other parts of the country.

Just a bit of a stiff breeze here at the mo. In fact I have just come in from cutting the grass as its been warm and sunny most of the day and the breeze dried things off nicely. Last cut of the year I hope. Forecast is for 50-60mph gusts overnight and into tomorrow though. I am beating up on the moors near here, it could be fun up there tomorrow.

Oh yeah and the light and air were really weird this morning. A leaden sky with a pinky yellow hue to to it gave a strange eerie sepia like tint to the light, and first thing thing the air felt stuffy and smelled slightly musty and dirty - probably straight up from the sahara or spain and full of dust or something. Strange indeed.
Stay safe Lutin & all.

Today at 3pm , was really dark, thought we were in for it but so far nothing.
Don't mind the wind during the day and believe me, we have had some corkers up here, but during the night -- no chance.

I remember heading back from Drumbeg late one night when my wife phoned me to say the garage door had caved in and was about to fall on my kit car. Started blowing up around 7pm, by the time I had got to Ullapool it was getting serious. I got blocked in both ways ( in the car ) and had to knock on a cottage door to get in. I can still hear the sound of the trees crashing around me in the dark, I was truly crapping myself, it was pitch black
Anyways, managed to get home eventually. The next day around Stoer/Lochinver it was carnage.

So, good luck to those who are in the middle of it, hope all you guys are safe out there
