Don't die of shock but Big Bird looks remarkably like a motorbike :)

The only bits left over Tony are the old exhaust and lots of old nuts and bolts so hopefully everything us back where it should be :)

That seems like a long time ago Michel, I'd only had her a few months when that picture was taken :)

it's a 'common' problem with these,

it was screeching when it disengaged which I'd put down to a sticking gear but I cleaned it and it made no difference, then it just jammed up and shorted the battery killing it dead (shows 12v but drops to 0v on load and takes no current from the charger)

it's usually the magnets in the starter that come adrift and jam it,

I had the exact same symptoms when I bought the bike and a new battery and started fixed it.

I knew they were a weak point hence me having a spare :)

Well prepared then.

I had heard about the magnets coming adrift - goodness knows where from.

Spare battery in my garage of you need one Ian, we leave early hours so you'll have to hurry up if you want it.

Christ, two generations of bike on and they still haven't sorted the selfdestructing Valeo starters? The later airheads were already known for dropping their magnets...

Still. What with shorting the battery, lucky the thing didn't catch fire.

Mmm, looks like I might have been a bit hasty with my diagnosis.

Fitted the spare starter and tried starting from my jump start pack........... CLICK!!!!!!!

bugger,

Took it off again and then connected both starters direct to a battery and they spun up fine.

Stripped the front end of the newer starter and gave it a good clean and refitted it.

Took the battery out of the bike and it's got good charge and charging ok

Put it all back together and all working again.

I can only put it down to a poor connection that I've inadvertently fixed by stripping it all out.

And of course I've ordered a new battery now, still won't hurt to keep the old one on the shelf as a spare.
