That looks very cold and miserable No salt on the road by the looks of things either. Go steady.

cold, yes, around 0 or 1 degree but to be honest not too much of a problem, the jacket I have is amazingly good temperature wise, once all the liners are in, and I was wearing only a T shirt and thin roll neck sweater underneath it . The leather motorcycle trousers are fine down to about this temperature, but had I been going further afeild or at motorway speeds I would have put waterproofs over the top as a wind cheater. Bering winter gloves, in conjunction with the hand guards on the xc and heated grips are up to the job so long as I make regular stops. This is the first time i have run the heated grips at full bore though :ride:. the BIG problem is the feet. bloody frozen after half an hour and no way of warming them. I definately need new boots if I'm going to do this sort of thing very often. Looks like that's the Christmas list sorted then...

No salt on the roads, not on these back roads anyway. it's ok in the dry but you need to be very careful in the sheltered bits...:motorcycle:

I did a 250mile round trip on Friday to Birmingham and back. Temperature was +1c when I left, reaching a mild 4c as I reached Brum. The return was a bit warmer at 5c to start dropping a bit to 3c as I got home after dark. I was not cold at all though, mainly due to a heated jacket and when its cold for a longer journey I wear a pair of these under my bike trousers: Montane Prism Trousers. Ignore the stupid price they are available for a lot less although still a lot but well worth it. Slippy vertex makes them easy to wear under your bike trousers and they are super-warm. Feet get cold coz the blood gets chilled on its way down. Trousers like these help loads, along with higher full calf length boots. Heated grips. big hand guards, some Held Freezer gloves and another super thing - Rev'it Amazon Balaclava complete the ensemble. The balaclava seals the gap around your neck and makes a big difference as again blood is not cooled as it makes it way to your brain Also brilliant in rain. A big screen is a HUGE help too. I tried handlebar muffs but really don't like them. Anyone want a pair of Tucano Urban muffs?

I’ve not heard of Montane kit before, seems good quality.
I just use my Rukka stuff with the removable lining, but today have taken the lining out of the jacket and am using my heated jacket. Which is nice and toasty.
I think I’m a wimp nowadays though compared to what I used to use.

hadn't thought of the "bllod cooling as it goes down the legs" phenomenon, but to be fair, down to 0 deg C i'm fine at non mortorway speeds, except for the feet ( my jacket liner is so efficient that i only wear a T shirt and thinpolo neck sweater under it and its a problem when I stop cos if i take the jacket off I freeze...) hands are in furygan winter gloves and behind the deflectors on the tiger's bars and legs are in "proper" leather bike trousers with thermals underneath if neccesary. The poor footsies however are in single skin leather mid season touring bike boots which are not only 20 something years old and of a size not permitting big woolly socks, but have the soles starting to open up at the toes and a full length zip down the inside on which the stitching is starting to come apart and leave openings... not surprising me feets is cold really... i just needs some now boots for Christmas. Seen some nice dainese goretex ones but 260€....

Just make sure Santa sees your need..... and keep your eyes skinned. Boot bargains do turn up periodically - I have a very nice pair of Alpinestars goretex boots: I found them at CMC newport last winter, at £99 (or maybe £97) ... should have been nearly £300. I just happened to visit when they were moving displays around. Not yet had the opportunity to try the fabled Gore waterproofing out (bl**dy fair weather bikers!), but they've certainly kept the tootsies warm over the last few weeks :)

In the meantime some Merino wool socks would help.

Merino is good and doesn’t get stinky but the warmest socks I have ever worn were made from possum fur. From Australia of all places. Not very hard wearing but super warm while they last

Winter is finally arriving over 'ere. It was -15c this morning (-20c in Ottawa) and a promise of 10cm of snow tonight. Now where's my passport.
