Route: Chepstow, along ridgeway through Devauden, Monmouth, Rockfield, Abergavenny, Llangynidr, to Talybont-On-Usk. Then over the mountain pass to Merthyr.

Advance notice, details to follow. DaveS and I are discussing a road-based ride on Saturday 13 April in South East Wales. Watch this thread for time and meeting point.

While you're here, I may also organise another 'dirty roads' ride (see The "I can't believe it's not a Byway" tour } in May. I need time to scout out a route for that though!!!

The country lanes on this trip should be much better than on the "I can't believe..." ride. In particular almost all stretches of road are wide enough for vehicles to pass each other. I can't guarantee that there will be absolutely no mud or gravel washed down from the fields. If the weather is dry during the previous week it should be fine though. (I may even bring the Death Star!)

The weather forecast is for dry and sunny, but perhaps cold. So do wrap up!

(I, on the other hand, will be on a bike with a large screen and fairing, and toasty heated seat and grips!!!)

Just got back from today's ride. Great day, lovely weather and despite having ridden the area for many years Dave managed to show me some roads I'd never been down.
Many, many thanks to Dave for arranging looking forward to the next one.

Cracking day out, temperature was chilly all day, great to see Young Dave S. on his shinny one. DW thanks again for finding roads which Mike and I have never been on. The boarder country has so many good roads which need to be ridden, next time.thanks for a good day out gents.

A bunch of teen-agers on an assortment of bikes were riding at crazy speeds both on road and off road: no crash helmets, no other gear, no consideration for anyone else, not much sense either unfortunately.

Stuart D asked for details of this route. You could download the attached (rename the suffix to .gpx) or simply enter the main waypoints in bold below:

Wye Valley Link Road, Chepstow, NP16 5BB
Devauden

(Trelleck) Items in brackets you don't absolutely NEED, and your GPS may take you off route into the village centre and back. You will see road signs for it though.
Rockfield
Oasis Sandwich Bar, Abergavenny, NP7 5EX

(Llangynidr)
Llandetty
Talybont-on-Usk
Abecynafon

(Cefn-coed-y-cymmer)
(Llwyn-Onn)
(Cwm Cadlan) - your GPS might not have this at all, but you will see a road sign.
CF44 0YJ
Penderyn

(Hirwaun)
