Whale Chain cutter

Dear All,

Well I think this is the last of my motorcycle related tools that I no longer need, so - offered on here before it goes on the auction site.

This is a Whale chain cutter kit that enables you to split and rejoin riveted chains on large capacity machines (without clip type joining links). This kit is professional quality and would cost new around £150.

The kit consists of a Whale riveting tool and an additional link splitter (not Whale brand but still good). All boxed as new, if fact it has probably only been used to fit three chains.

Anyone in the trade will tell you the Whale kit is the best bar none, and will outlast you or your bike.

So this obviously weighs a fair bit but for mainland UK I'll cover the postage on sensible offers, i.e.: approaching £100 or thereabouts.

Link to where you can see some photos.

Have a look - anyone interested - drop me a line.

Followed your link mate, and that looks a great bit of kit!

Unfortunately I'm through my 'this month's' disposable already on a polycarb headlight guard and, by co-incidence, a rivet-able link for my Izumi chain :/

I've been running for about 750 miles with a split link and around 70 plus mph it's something that I think about ;)

A generic chain splitter/riveter seems to be around the 50 to 75 quid mark, with a professional one costing what yours did; just asking mate, as I've never used one, is a more heavy duty chain tool less likely to offset or crack the rivet or is it a case of making the job faster as it needs less elbow grease?

Apologies for hi-jacking your topic, I rang around town this week and a couple of garages quoted me 15 to 20 quid to rivet my new link onto my nearly new chain. Between my bikes, and lending out to my mates for their ones it seems a better bet to buy a tool, but for the moment it's something that would have to wait a few months.

I guess in a roundabout way I'm asking is your Whale what a reputable bike workshop would use to sort mine, if so I'm happy to give 'em my cash for the one off job of riveting that'll hopefully last a couple of years :)

Hi Toppbuzz,

Benefit of the Whale is that it forms the peened ends on the pins with more accuracy/security, it is also built so that there is sufficient mass in the tool that you don't damage the rest of the chain during the peening process. Some tools just force a point into the end of the pin to spread the end, the Whale folds the edge over like the OE process. Never really liked the idea of a 530 chain coming apart at speed next to my left foot so bought the 'proper' tool. On the Elefants a broken chain usually meant a scrap crankcase.

Hope your local bike shop uses something similar, I'm sure they will if they are professionals.

Good luck with your sale :)
