Ok after playing around for weeks now on my little laptop trying to get my Gopro footage sorted i was told the fecking thing is nowhere near powerful enough.
Anyone got any recommendation for a Laptop which can cope with that and cost max about £500?

Any makes i should avoid or maybe specially should look for?
What sort of minimum requirements would i need to do some video editing?

I seen a few HP laptops with about 6-8GB of ram,are they any good as they go for little money?

I've just been through the same thing and while I wanted mine for lightroom and photoshop I still needed a beefy(ish) machine.

From what I read you really want an i5 or i7 processor and a bucket of ram. The laptop you mention above is "only" an i3 so you might be worth spending a little more and going for a newer processor.

Without going through all my reasoning I ended up with an ASUS X550CA. i5 cpu 8gb ram and 1tb disk. It cost me somewhere between 5 and 6oo quid

I like it. Build quality is good wit lots of expansion ports and it fairly zips along with however there are a couple of things that really annoy me.
One is windows 8 (and 8.1) its horrible and I just cant get used to it. I've tried to make mine work like 7 and I can now live with it but if I ever had to rebuild it I'd go with windows 7
the other is the trackpad. Instead of having separate buttons the whole surface of the trackpad is one big button and depending where your finger is when you press it it decides whether it was a left or right click. Problem I have is if you don't lift your other (pointing) finger off the pad then it thinks you are doing a two fingered gesture (snigger) and something unexpected happens. It's also pretty much impossible to be precise as as your finger moves around, even slightly, as you actually press the button the cursor moves. This makes photo editing pretty much impossible. I've seen the same pads on other laptops so not just an asus problem. I have to use a proper mouse when I use Photoshop.
Battery life is not as good as some but that wasn't one of the things I bothered about as I mostly use it in the house.

Looking at the link Russ posted that is probably a better machine for your needs. I considered it but I needed a VGA out (I run a kvm on my big screen in the office and it needs that to trigger) and I fancied a touchscreen (proved to be useless).

As Boris has said, Asus are good, too. And, if such a machine is available in your price range, it's worth looking for one with a dedicated graphics processor (GPU) instead of the built-in (Intel) one. But the main thing is to shop around - PC World are not renowned for low prices !

What sort of 'action' vids are we talking about Pete?

If it's you and Deb, we really don't want too much detail. Oh, and keep the music volume low otherwise it's a distraction :D
