A bit late I know, spoke to a local guy working for me, says lot of activity around Toungue, military you understand :D . Anyways , phoned up that military guru , our own Steve T who informs me it is part of operation whatsit, apparently the only exercise where they use REAL AMMO in the UK to blast big chunks of rock somewhere off Durness.
Well, got me thinking, Durness camp site, adjacent to local pub, bit of blasting going on
What can I say ------ I'm in :thumbsupanim:

So to re cap, this is the weekend starting Fri 10th until Sat evening, poss Sun. I'm hoping to be there Fri afternoon and see the big boys at work.
Depending on weather of course. I'll log on again tomorrow night cos the IT signal here is crap TTFN

Excercise Joint Warrior 142

Amended the title for you John boy.

Plenty of info on the 'tinternet about the excersise, and according the Royal Navy's info to shipping, there is live ship to shore firing on Friday 10th and Saturday 11th.

Couldn't find anything about the bombing, but that has, in the past, taken place during the 2nd week of the excercise, but only during the week, never weekends (Air Force (or "Crabs" to Debs) don't you know, don't "do" weekends :D )
If we got really lucky with the tides, we could ride across the beach and up onto Fairad Head to the range control building - done it before and it was a hoot watching a 1150GsA dig it self into the soft sand, whilst my svelte AT floated over it all :thumbsupanim:

I'm taking the brightest, yellowist tent I can find, just so's they don't think I'm a target!
Hang on a minute though . . . . the targets are painted yellow :eekicon: .

Seriously, I was told a story by the senior Air Force aircraft controller of an incident involving an American navy destroyer involed in some ship to shore gunnery firing. Thier (the Yanks) system was to include the range control building into their target numbering system, as Number 1, with notes indicating that it was the control and NOT a target.
Before allowing firing to commence, the range controller requested confirmation of designated target from the firing ship. The reply came back from the ship - "Target 1" !
This was as the ships gunner had locked in the co-ordinates of the radar laid gun and confirmed gun locked on target :eekicon:

Now, how far from the range is the camp site? :D

PS - I'm IN :thumbsupanim:

Right, having read the stuff in Charlie's link I am going to try and come for this. Get Friday off work (again) and finish early Thursday. Stay somewhere Thursday night north of Glasgow and should be up at Durness by midday Friday.

The link says live firing on Friday and Saturday at Cape Wrath :) ;) :)

I will let you know if I am coming in the week.

Excellent - be great to see you this far North Austin :D

I'll be attempting to make contact with the range controller that I know and get a better idea of whats happening & when on the range. Details on here when I get them.

We can ride across the beach, through the sand dunes and up to the range building. I've done it twice when the tides been out, but the main "track" across the beach is above the strand line, so even at high tide is should be "do-able".

Now all I need to do is de-conflict some work sh1te and I'll be rolling north on Friday afternoon.

I think it's campsite in Durness. IIRC it's right in the village but on top of a cliff overlooking the sea. A windy spot - next stop is the North Pole. :)

BUMMER

I've contacted the range manny up at Durness and ther is NO GUNNING on Saturday :(

So for those contemplating travelling to the ends of the earth, or Durness as it's also known, from far afield, please be aware - No BIG BANGS.

I've informed his lowliness Lowflyer and he says it's hardly worth going if nowts going BANG

He'll be along after work to lend his wisdom to the topic.

TTFN,

Austin,

There may be shelling on the Friday. The range controller cleared us up onto the headland, but not to the control tower, so there is still a ride across the beach!
I've got Friday booked off and was thinking of running up there first thing on Friday morning, then riding home again after a suitable time viewing any preceedings.

I'd be delighted to offer you a place to stay for the night Austin, but youngest will be here with his tribe, so no space at the inn I'm afriad . . . .but Lowflyer has just offered you a bed at his place in Inverness if your interested?

PM on it's way with phone number, if you want to chat
