Picos de Europa

Couple more pics here from my first trip there 10 yrs ago on my TA. There are loads of trails going up to the plateau above Fuente De. I remember Mitsubishi Delica taxis taking tourists up there. Not sure if they were open to bikes, or if their status has changed since then. You should check. Regardless of this there is great tarmac. There was a good Vuelta stage there a couple of weeks ago.

BTW Potes was OK and the campsites were fine with great facilities, just very small pitches.

so it did happen. What a beautiful part of Spain, green, lush country side, perfect tarmac, mountain roads, lakes and views to die for. We were lucky, weather was decent apart from one day when it rained a bit. Opted for a warm villa in Peruyes, near Canga de Onis. Lovely hamlet with just the one bar.....we were the best customers obviously....as it was 6 of us, the villa worked out more or less same price as camping and we had all the commodities including secure parking for the bikes.
Rode around the Picos, Bulnes (only village in Europe which does not have a road to get there, you can only reach it by a funicular ride, (a must!!), Puerto del Ponton, Covadonga and the lakes, (had to go back the next day, first day the fog was so thick we could not see the lakes!) Snow on the side of the road but roads were clear....apart from the usual four legged friends who seem to have the habit of popping out from everywhere.
Food is cheap, eating out sets u back an average of 10/15 Euros and most of the times drinks are included in the menu of the day. On the recommendation of a newly acquired friend, we headed for a place called Pendones.....again a must in my view, have lunch in Casa Juanin, the waiter is 83 years old with memories that stretch back to the horrors of the civil war (if you speak the lingo), but the food is devine!

For a seaside excursion or two, I would highly recommend Ribadesella East of Gijon and Luanco to the west.

Left StAnder with heavy heart but the sunny, calm seas, whales watching return crossing helped to cure the blues.......all in all, if you are a good biker all your life, when the time comes you could find yourself in Asturias....:)

I have a few shots but have not mastered the art of adding piccies on here..... :27:
