yamaha DT50 wiring

One for Lutin probably.

Daughter's Yamaha DT50 (32 years old). If we take a wire direct from the battery into the handlebar main switch then the lights all work, front and rear, main beam and dipped, so there is no problem with the lights themselves or the battery. But there appears to be no power from the generator. There is ignition-fed power going in.

Separately, the brake lights work fine too.

There is power to ignition and indicators and horn, just not to lights.

Going back to the garage for more head scratching buy thoughts please.

Head scratching over. I shall now run an hide, given how bleeding obvious it was.

you don't get away that easily

spill the beans.....

You called? :D

Did you ever get a proper wiring diagram for the bike?

I could be wrong but I think that there are two coils on the generator - one for the ignition and one for the lights.

Lights only work when engine running. So I had fixed the bad connection in the switch, as proved by running off a direct feed from battery. But, with only a 6v battery the lights only work when engine running.

Hmm, that's interesting. How good (or bad) are the lights? With it being a 6 volt system I cannot see them being blindingly bright.

All puns copyright. :D

They are awful. Seriously bad. I doubt my daughter will be out on the bike at night much. As soon as she's 17 we'll get a 125.

Fair enough. Only when you do, get one that I have a chance of finding the wiring diagram for. ;)

Did I not post one up before? It wasn't for the DT50 but another small engined Yamaha and the wire colours that chris mentioned before all seemed to line up.

I bought a Haynes. The wiring diagram is in black and white with colours indicated by letters (L for blue, for example). That was how I knew where to trace the wires.

There basically a battery and a single 10amp fuse for the whole bike. There's loads online about 12v conversions for classic Vespas, making buying the right kit and changing the right wires or fuses easy, but nothing I could find for the DT, otherwise I think it would be a great mod. I'd like to de restrict it if I knew how. It was clearly done years ago (air box drilled) but the previous owner rebuilt it back to spec with a brand new exhaust. I believe there is something in the exhaust I need to remove.

I'm not putting a big bore kit on or anything, but it struggles to make 30mph.

A common restriction mod of the time was to tack weld a washer in the otherwise standard exhaust at the header end.

so I need to remove the exhaust from the header and remove the blockage? That was what I think I read somewhere too. Presumably I need to replace the exhaust gasket. Will order one (£1.25).
