This is the thread that will hold the main details of the meetup, list who is coming, what accommodation they want and who has paid what. Please keep chatter to other threads.
Please read right through this post so you fully understand the event before committing and if you want to come along let me have the information asked for at the end in this post, I will then update post #2 with the list of participants.
What is it?
This meet up and ride out is a 2 day event on the 2nd / 3rd August 2014 but I will book accommodation for the night of 1st August as well to allow for a fairly early start. The official Start of the ride out will be on Saturday 2nd in Edale at about 9.30 at the start point of the official Pennine Way route and the end will be in Kirk Yetholm, Scotland in the afternoon of the 3rd. We will ride mostly on tarmac roads along some of the best biking roads in the UK keeping as close to the Pennine Way as possible while also allowing for diversions along any legal green lanes close to the route. I will also plan stops and breaks at some of the sights, cultural locations, and historical locations en-route. On the Saturday we will stay in a Bunkhouse around about mid-way not from Hawes, Yorkshire. Total mileage for the road ride will be in the region of 330 miles so the pace will be fairly relaxed, with lots of stops, but the roads are mostly minor so it wont feel like a slow ride.
The ride out itself does not have to be a mass follow the leader ride as I will provide details of the official route, waypoints, POIs etc so you can do your own thing, follow your own route, split into smaller groups, stop where you like, and just meetup at the overnight stops.
Some notes on the green lanes. This is still a work in progress and may be a bit ambitious but I will update later. To add an extra dimension to the ride I will find some legal green lanes that are not too far from the road route. Going along these is optional and I will try and classify them so you have idea if your skill level, bike, and volume weight of luggage make travelling along them a realistic prospect. More to follow over the coming weeks.
I was thinking of looking in at the following places on route: last of the summer wine exhibition, Holmfirth; Bronte Museum, Haworth; Malham Cove and/or Goredale scar; Ribblehead Viaduct; Buttertubs; High Force Waterfall; Roman Wall somehwere; Kielder Forest Visitor Centre; Military Ranges roads. If anyone has other suggestions please let me know.
Accommodation and Costs
The costs for the event is just the accommodation costs. I have provisionally reserved 12 bunks in hostels in Derbyshire, Yorkshire and Northumberland. The at a cost of £15, £15, and £15.50 respectively per person per night. Camping is available for a "few" tents in Derbyshire and unlimited tents in Yorkshire, both are £8 per night. Unfortunately no camping is available in Northumberland at or near the Hostel but the hostel does do 4 "shepherds huts" which sleep two in bunks at £36 per night (note these are now fully booked). When I spoke to the guy at the hostel he reckoned the best night's sleep was always had in the huts.
The Hostels are:
Friday night the Royal Oak, Hurdlow......http://www.peakpub.co.uk/camping/#conditions
Saturday Night The Green Dragon, Hardraw, nr Hawes...http://www.greendragonhardraw.com/accommodation.html
Sunday Night Wooler Youth Hostel....http://www.woolerhostel.co.uk/accommodation
All the hostels have plenty of spare bunks at the moment so I should be able to extend the bookings. I dont think I will need to pay the camping up front so I wont need any payment if you plan to camp.
Anyone wanting to stay in the Hostels or in a shepherds hut will be required to pay me in advance. Prices are per person:
All 3 Nights = £45.50
Friday & Saturday = £30
Saturday & Sunday = £30.50
Shepherds Hut on Sunday is for two so double the above and add £5, eg (£45.50 x 2)+£5 = £96 for two people or (£30.50 x 2)+£5=£66
How to pay and book
Payment to be made by direct transfer to my Bank account, cash or cheque payable to Austin Winckler and sent to "The Maharaja of Garstang, 40 Croston Road, Garstang, Lancs, PR3 1HR.
account details..... number 13264869. code 010333, Please use your forum name as the reference.
Once I have had payment your are committed and if you need to pull out I can only refund if the Hostels agree to refund me but it would be better if we can try and find a substitute. In my experience hostels are very flexible and usually only charge for beds actually taken as long as it is reasonably close to the booking. I have discussed this with the hostels already and all have agreed to be flexible as they understand how difficult it can be to organise people.
If after all that you still want to come then please say in this thread and include what accommodation you want, for example
Yes I would like to come on your wonderful Pennine Way trip. I will require camping on Friday night, two hostel beds on Saturday night, and a shepherds hut on Sunday night at a total cost of £66.00. I have made a payment to your account using the reference "your forum name" Thank you.
I hope you all have a great trip. I am getting nervous now.
