I am so glad I came on yet another great Welsh Invastion. I’ve had a 576 mile round trip. On Thursday night I stayed with a friend I have not seen for 30 years, which was a real bonus. I met RichieB at Magor services and we headed to Pembrey Sands Air Weapons Range on Friday morning, popping to the shops before unloading in our barrack room that I nicknamed Obama.

We benefitted from amazing facilities, including a gym and snooker table (neither got used) and plenty of room for us to sit and chat and to eat round a table (using the crockery with the red, white and blue trim, not the gold trim – we were instructed). There was a full catering kitchen with everything we needed – there was even a self-filling urn, providing a constant stream of boiling water for tea and coffee.

The gents even had Swarfegar on tap (I didn’t check whether the RAF was sexist or whether there was one of these in the ladies too).

We had tea and cake once Stubbsie had arrived with his missus’s provisions. Obvioulsy we all drank our tea with our little pinkies raised.
Two bottles of wine were left together and suddenly there was a baby – making it the first Big Trailie baby, just beating Pig Ugly and V. A substantial amount was drunk.

On Saturday, there were two rideouts – Mike taking the tourist sites ride and J taking the snowy, muddy minor roads route across the Brecon beacons.

I went with J and it was great (especially J nearly coming off with a two-wheel slide in about four inches of mud on a country lane). We stopped for only a few minutes in the snow and everyone’s fingers froze – but it was brilliant up there.

We also called in to the Ancient Briton, where, despite the range of beers, we had a coffee. I must go back. I am pretty sure we also passed the Salutation, which was just named Best Pub in Britain, so that’s another reason for a trip back too.

When RichieB and I got back to base, Richie could not open the gate, until he realised he was using the wrong key. In his rush he then got on his bike and promptly fell off the other side, testing his bike’s crash bars. Unfortunately, by the time I had stopped laughing he had picked up his bike so I got no photos.
Yet more beer and wine was consumed on Saturday night.
On Sunday all hands were put to cleaning the place and leaving it spotless in the hope we will be allowed back.
Then the promised rain arrived. I decided to race home, so apologies to failing to say goodbye. I managed to get to the front of the weather front just as I got to the Severn Bridge and spent the rest of the journey home in the dry. I did it in one, non-stop trip - 214 miles in 3hrs 23mins.
It was great to see everyone. Thanks to RichieB for the getting the place and too all the catering and cleaning corps. When’s the next one?
