A day in the Dales

Hi all, took a week off work (and decided not to go back!) so last weekend Fiona and myself organized a van, loaded in the Transalp and headed down to our good friend Simon Hudsons in Barnoldswick!
Van booked from Enterprise for 08.30 on Friday, eventually get the van at 12.40! Not a great start! Mental note, no more vans from Enterprise
Any way, load up the Transalp and off we go, 9.30p.m. we arrive at Simons so just time for a swift couple of drinks then off to bed.
Saturday morning we headed off for the Dales, Simon on his DRZ 400 and me on the 700 Transalp, the TKC's were going to earn their money as the plan was to do a bit of green laning!
Simon will have to fill you in with where all we went as I just followed! But I do recall we started off having a brew in Buckden just before heading offroad and I remember passing through Dent, we had our lunch there. The lanes were amazing, those drains across the middle of the road made riding entertaining on the Transalp as the suspension bottomed out quite a bit. There were a couple of rocky bits which threw the Transalp about a bit but Simon chose the tracks well and all was fine.
When stopped for a break, the silence up on the moors was astounding. These lanes will be sorely missed when the ramblers finally get their way and shut them all down to vehicular access. One of the lanes we were on had chains on the main gates and signed no cars or quads. (we passed the only other people we met on the lanes there, two Sertao's and a Van van). Simon explained to me the number of lanes that are now closed to vehicles and agrees it's only a matter of time.
I really enjoyed my day out in Yorkshire and can only empathise with you guys, Scotland lost all its access and it will be a sad day when these lanes are no longer available.
A brilliant BBQ was then laid on by Simon which led to much consumption of alcohol to wash down the excellent food!
Sunday, he decides the perfect hangover cure was to drag Fiona and myself walking over Weets hill, only a mere 6 or 7 miles! Certainly blew out the cobwebs!
A visit to the Bancroft mill engine trust for the afternoon to see the steam engine running, it was amazing to see all the steam plant and the loom working.
Another BBQ as the weather was still fantastic on Sunday then back up the road on Monday.
The van was a Vauxhall Vivaro, the bike fitted in no problem and can't fault the van to drive, £130 for the four days.
A brilliant trip, special thanks to Simon Hudson, a special weekend, with a brilliant host, never seen so much cider in a fridge before! LOL! And the BBQ? Stunning food! The Yorkshire dales? Absolutely stunning! Even the tar roads, with all those stone dykes, brilliant, absolutely brilliant!

Sounds like a great trip Jim. I am only 30 miles from the dales and they always wow me. In fact the pennine way trip goes right through them this weekend but it looks like we are going to get some proper weather and not namby pamby sunshine.

I would use enterprise one more time but next time let them know how badly you were let down. Last time time this happened to me I got a high spec C class merc instead of the Corsa I had booked. :)

Sent from my iPhone with a smile :)

They said 20% off next time so being Scottish probably will take them up on it!
