Day 9.
Having eaten another feast the Irish call breakfast I set off along the side of Tralee Bay towards the Dingle peninsula.

Here is a video I found on Youtube which gives an idea of what it is like.

Dropping down the other side through Dingle and on towards the Ring of Kerry that everyone tells you is a must drive route, to be honest I thought it was nothing special, some nice scenery, but I have seen better. A few shots of the Ring.

A few miles in there is a sign for the Skellig Ring, I took this road and to my mind it is a far better route, nicer views and a lot less tourist traffic.

By this time I was starting to worry about fuel as I had not seen a petrol station for a long time.
The town of Castletown-Bearhaven was a welcome sight, fuelling up there I moved on to near Glengarriff where I stopped for the night having covered 202 miles in mostly sunny weather.

Nice to see that the weather is holding out for you, Andy.

Yes, the weather here is fine today for a change as I sit at home in Scotland trying to catch up on my journey pictures. :D

So, did you bail out of riding up the east coast then?

Day 10.
Taking off from the digs near Glengarriff the road took me to Bantry Bay.
20095256826_7c31da672a_c.jpg

Then along the coast on what I think was called the old goat road, rather appropriate some might say. I drove along here for more than 1/2 an hour and the only living thing I saw was a dog that ran out from a yard and tried to catch the bike.

20121544955_699f1f1254_c.jpg

The view from here was amazing, but you would not want to fall off and hurt yourself as you would probably die of loneliness before anyone came along the road.
Further along I came upon this, no idea what it means/commemorates as I could not see any writing.
20121546465_6f87044551_c.jpg

I then went out to Mizen head which was mobbed with tourists.
Just a couple of views from the car park as I could not be arsed walking along the head with all the people milling about.

You can also see an oil platform from there, although the camera was on full zoom.

Stopped in Goleen for baccy, and yes, a coffee and scone.

The back along the coastline.

19501448303_0983c94a5b_c.jpg

Feeling a bit peckish (I do need more than scones you know) I pulled in the The Motorcycle Grill in a place called Leap where I had something to eat and a chat with the owner who is also a biker. As I was preparing to leave he wanted to take a picture for his facebook page so I gave him my usual grumpy look.

19500545924_35a2aa6537.jpg

Then on to Galley head.

19499808554_02c5e048e5_c.jpg

So now we come to the last bit of the Wild Atlantic Way, the Head of Kinsale Lighthouse.

19500265194_be3c55e8ca_z.jpg

Tavelling from there to Kinsale you pass the sign for the end of the WAW but I could not get a picture as it is on a downhill bend on the main road, and it had started to rain so I just kept driving on to my overnight stop in Rostellan. 230 miles today.
It will be up the east coast tommorow then!

you are bound to be getting fed up with cliffs by now, but do not fear, I have more.
So, are we to conclude from this ride report that Ireland is an island? Who'd have known?

Or did you mean you were on a summer holiday?

Day 11.
From the B&B at Rostellan I headed down a single track to the shore at Gyleen.

Then moving on to Inch beach, there would seem to be a few beaches with that name in Ireland.

20131706321_de701a25f7_c.jpg

I then went to Midleton and on to Youghal where I stopped and took this picture looking back at the town.

19505210353_4dd1d05b88_c.jpg

On up the coast ending up at Dungarvan.

By then it was about time for coffee and a bit of fruit cake, just for a change so I went it to the Copper Coast Geopark Visitor centre in Bunmahon. On leaving there I took a few pictures of old copper mine workings.

This last photo is taken from the shore where the mine buildings have long since fallen into the sea but some of the tunnels can still be seen on the cliff face.

Thats all for today as there was nothing more that really interested me so I made my way up through Wexford to Gorey for the night as the rain was just starting................again! 192 miles for the day.

Day 12.
On waking up today I could see it was still raining like there was no tomorrow and looking at the forecast for the next couple of days showed no respite. Not really wanting to go sightseeing in the pissing rain I made the choice to just head north to the ferry.
Left Gorey at 10.20 AM and just sat on the main roads and motorways all the way to Larne arriving at the ferry port at 2.45 Pm and it had rained all the way. Got a ticket for the 4.30 PM sailing and went for some food. After getting on board I spent a pleasant 2 hours in the company of 3 bikers from Nottingham who had been to a race meeting in the north somewhere.
Getting off the boat, you guessed it, it was raining, and it rained all the way home. I got back to Selkirk at 9.45 PM, 361 long, miserable miles to end my travels. So, obviously no pics for today as I am sure you all know what rain looks like.
As for the trip, one of the best times I have had, great roads (bends, climbs, hairpins, single tracks) the road surface not so much, so anyone going to Ireland be prepared for rough roads.
The people are very welcoming, the food is great, and prices are IMO very reasonable, in fact the whole trip including ferry/fuel/food and accommodation cost me a measly £680, not bad value at all. Would I advise anyone to go and do the trip around the coast? too right, it is a great way to spend a couple of weeks, but do remember the waterproofs.

Just seen this. Nice trip. Looks sunny in most of the photos. I don't believe it actually rained, have you got any evidence?
