An author just asked me to name a cool affordable motor bike of the early 80's that would of been ridden by a motor bike enthusiast of 20 years is age. Your suggestions please, with reasons (and pics, if you have any).

Unquestionably RD350LC:

reasons: next step up from 250 and affordable for 20 year old. Best value ( £ vs performance) mid size bike of the time.

Now a classic.

Suzuki X7 - bit of an 'Ooligan bike, twisty and nippy, best ridden wearing sunglasses ;)

Is your guy needing a reference for a book? Like, 'Johnny was feeling frustrated and moody, with a grimace, he aggressively started up, and roared off down the M1 on his (Honda C90 / Puch Maxi / insert appropriate 'cool' bike' here)' ? :)

I have no idea what you guys at the other side of the channel were riding in the early eighties if you were 20 years old, but here in Sweden we were riding Honda SOHC 750 with Clip-ons and Devil 4-1 systems.
Sometimes they were equipped with Dunstall parts, sometime with a Muscle Machine body kit from a Swedish company.
A Few Rickman framed Honda or Kawasaki bikes.
I remember some Kamikaze crazy boys on Kawasaki H1 or H2 two strokes, blinding and choking the rest of the world with unburnt thick twostroke oil...
Other bikes that were common were Kawasaki Z650, Z1000 and Suzuki GS750E/GS1000E.
My self I got my first brand new bike in '81 and it was a SR500 with wire wheels.

Beeing 20 in the early eighties here in Sweden usullay meant that one had to rely on bikes that were 5-10 years old to be affordable.
Also Sweden have always been focused on Engine size, so our bikes were usually bigger then 750 cc.

Definately agree with the Fizzy for the older teens of the time (I remember yearning for one but not being old enough...) & the early 20's all wanted an RD350LC.

I was at boarding school at the time & our dorm room walls were plastered with posters of RD's in various guises. :rolleyes2:

I was well into bikes and was 20 in 1980. But as a poor student I was on Honda 250G5. But we all wanted RD250/350 or a 400. I wouldn't count them as particularly "cool" then as everyone had them.

Cool but affordable in the 80s for me meant a Kawasaki Z650 in metallic green with flat bars and a loud 4:1 exhaust.

Sent from my iPhone with a smile :)
