FORUM FUTURE

I have been a forum supporter since day one, no regrets at all about continuing paying subs. But I guess it's up to the collective. I think it is grossly unfair to ask Dave to continue to shell out his own cash, so I have a cunning plan --
Why don't we hold a few raffles at the National, all profits to go towards the club ? we should make a few bob or two, even from the tight Yorkshire guys ;):) At least come January we may be a little bit more sustainable.

I'll kick off with a delightful Malt which will be donated by my nephew.
Whadya think guys ??

You’re all wonderful thank you.
I’ll turn subs on to auto renew, that will help. If that’s a problem let me know.

Morning all, I saw the post in Moderators when Dave posted it.

My take is this, it will be a shame but I think it's time to call time on forum.

Most people are on FB and there is The XRV old farts Whats APP group.

Membership has dropped peoples situations and interests have changed and its not likely to go up so will cost more. The forum is not attracting new members as there is very little going on as in posts and meet ups.

The technical costs will rise as everything is and no one has the time or interest to learn this part, so every year we would need a buffer of money to cover this. It will not get much revenue from adds as there is no traffic.

So I am concious that I am not subscribing. Maybe I missed it. Maybe I paid once and assumed it would come out via direct debit. I don't know. But if I don't, then I am sure others don't. Let's get a membership buzz going and make it £20 a year, collected automatically annually. But I can lose £50 extra now too if that helps.

Well you are all an amazing group of lovely super people. After some discussions behind the scenes it's clear that very many people like the forum, love the camaraderie and want to secure its future, and I've had an offer of a significant donation that really does help.
I never really wanted to take donations or ask for financial help, but I guess I need to feel comfortable in that to keep us going.

So each year I'll keep doing what I'm doing in managing the forum. If you're happy to pitch in technically please do let me know!
I'll publish high level forum accounts, income and expenditure to show what's coming in and going out.
I'll increase the subs (which will still be voluntary) to £25 per year and make these recurring...
If anyone wants to pay me directly rather than via PayPal that is always an option, by bank transfer (we have a separate forum bank account) and that stops PP taking a cut.
I'm happy to take any donations, via raffles, or whatever, etc... again just get in touch with how to do that.

It would massively help if members can step forward to create interesting content (ride reports, reviews, events)... that all drives traffic and advertising revenue to the site (our last advertising payout was in 2019!) Also recruiting members would help... more to share around. Also I guess more events, which I know is a hassle to organise... all helps to keep the forum and membership alive though.
Any other ideas most welcome.

And thank you from the bottom of my heart for all being amazing.

I know I don't frequent here much and I certainly haven't posted much, if anything, for the last 10 years or so but I do dip in and out. I guess I look on here as the new "old XRV" and something very dear to my heart and something that gave me a lot of fun and enabled some fantastic get togethers with some great folk and it's because of that I'd hate to see it go.

I know in the cold light of day internet forums may well have had their day what with Facebook, Snapchat and other instantly consumable and disposable social media but there is something reassuring about a place where everyone knows nearly everyone else and usually by their first name and for that reason alone I want to see it survive especially as if it ceases to exist it's uniqueness will be gone forever along with the last links many of us have to some amazing people, holidays and nationals. I guess it feels like an old loyal family pet that's almost done. You know in your head the sensible thing to do involves a trip to the vet but in your heart you can't bear the thought and want to do everything you can to prolong a happy life even if doing so flies in the face of convention.

So with that in mind I've been in touch with Dave and hopefully things can stay largely as they are for a while at least.

yep we discussed this over that posh wine glass in York...:) what you say makes sense but at the same time I would be sorry to see this Forum going under.....maybe as Herriot's character Jack Scott's dog Rip, we can give the forum another chance ......:)

What are the bank details? I'll set up a standing order. I'll try to organise a Southern meet up.

This could turn into a Top Gear like contest of who can bring the most awkward thing to carry on the back of a bike. ;)
Ain't my sofa already won that?
