New alp owner in Stafford

Hi all,
I've had an '89 transalp for the past few months, mostly sorting out previous owners neglect.. but aside from a sticky choke and a welded drive sprocket it's running well.
I'm originally from near Newcastle upon Tyne, but moved to Stafford last year for an apprenticeship.
I'm looking forward to getting out on my alp and doing some light off roading/greenlaning with it.
I'm hoping to get to the national in September but it depends on what gear I can get together by then.
Look forward to meeting you all
Glenn

Hi there,
Nice to have you on board. Transalp riders unite lol. Hope you can make the nationals.

Welcome Glenn

Thought you were joking in the other thread about the bodged / welded on sprocket

Hope you are aware of the implications of this and what has caused it

Hi and welcome.

The National is worthwhile & always a good laugh - a cheap tent, sleeping bag and rollmat all stuffed in a waterproof roll bag & you are sorted :)

Thanks folks,
Yeah Paul, a previous owner has, at some point welded the sprocket, I'll replace the shaft when I can, it seems daft to me to replace a perfectly good engine, which is what some have suggested, when it would cost me as much to replace the shaft (doing the work myself), I've heard that the worn splines could be due to incorrect chain tension or use of a non genuine sprocket, can anyone enlighten me further?
Thanks again,
Glenn

Quite often the chains are overtigtenned causing excess pressure on the output shaft and bearing

A rule of thumb on the ATs is the chain when on the side stand should have 70mm gap between the midpoint of the chain and the swing arm

If you can push the chain up but it does not touch you should be OK

Any tighter you're asking for trouble

The slack is taken up by the movement of the rear shock when you are on it and the suspension is compressed

The TA should be similar
