Pennine Way Run: Friday Night at the Royal Oak information

This thread holds all the information you need about Friday night's accommodation and food at the Royal Oak Hurdlow. I will start other threads over the next few days for the other accommodations.

Booking Information
I have upped the booking to 13 bunk beds and 5 camping in 4 tents. I have paid a deposit of £105, being for 7 bunks beds. We are in two rooms of 8 beds so there's a few more spaces before I have to up the booking again. The balance of the fees and the camping needs to be paid by 1st July. I will be in touch with the campers separately about payment, but basically I will need £8 per tent (unless you have a humungous one).

Bunk House
For those in the bunk house you need to bring a sleeping bag, duvet, or a blanket with you. A pillow, pillow case, and a bottom sheet are provided. The kitchen is very small and only really suited to making tea and coffee and heating up a meal or two. Please see below about meals. There's no big communal space in the bunk house so for socialising we are in the pub, the pub garden, or the Vaders' tent.

Check in is from 4pm and the booking is in my name - Austin Winckler. I will be travelling down after work with an ETA of around 7.30-8.00. Checkout is by 10am but we will need to be well gone by then.

Meals
I have provisionally said we would eat at the pub and we will need to order from the set price menu - I suggest we go for set Menu A which is a mixed shared starter and a choice of the most popular main meals. £15.50 per person.
http://www.peakpub.co.uk/pages/groupsetmenu They have asked for our order about 1 week before we stay. I will start asking for menu choices around about then. To give everyone time to arrive I have taken the late sitting which should be served about 8.15 to 8.30. Let me know if you want to make other arrangements for evening meals.

I also said we would notbe having breakfast at the pub. I thought we would make an early start to re-meet at Jellies for breakfast and to allow anyone else to join us who isn't staying at the Royal Oak and also make Jellies the official start of the run. I haven't done proper timings but would have thought we need to be away from the Royal Oak by 8.00 to 8.15, Jellies is about 10miles/15mins away and we need to be aiming to leave Jellies by 9.30.

General Information about the pub, the bunkhouse and the campsite is on its website
http://www.peakpub.co.uk/ There are tabs on the website for specific information about accommodation, food, location, and so on. Make sure you have read and understood it all.

Finally the landlord did remind me that the bunkhouse and the campsite will have other people, including families staying so we need to be considerate, but he did go on to say that groups of bikers are some of his favourite groups as we generally have the right sort of attitude.

I suppose the other purpose of this thread is for you to let me know if you are OK with the arrangements as above and what if anything else you want.

bump. Not long now. :D

Indeed so. Just been mulling over what to do either side of this jaunt.

Other than catching up with some family - which is basically unavoidable.

Popped into the pub / bunk house to check it our while I was in the area at the Jellies meet. Nice place, mildly upmarket in style and presentation mostly laid out as dining tables but still with 5 draught beers and good slection of lagers. I liked the place and the staff.

Its easy to find just off the A515 Buxton to Ashbourne road about 5 miles south of Buxton. Look for a sigh for Hurdlow on the west side of the road, over the railway and you are there. The camping barn is to the rear/side of the pub and the camping field/garden just a bit further on. Bunkhouse and Campers share the toilet and shower facilities - 4 showers and loos in each of the ladies and gents. There is a very small kitchen with microwave, toaster, kettle and I think I saw an a cooker. OK for heating things up and a brew but that would be about it. They were quite open and said we want you eat in the pub. We have got two x 8 berth bunk-bed rooms reserved for us. You need a sleeping bag or duvet but bottom sheet and pillow & case are provided. Both rooms are quite, erm, cosy; one room is up some external stairs, the other downstairs. There will be other people in the bunk house as it sleeps 32+

On food, they said they will be fully booked on a Friday night in August so I reserved a table for us all to eat at 8.30pm to give everyone a chance to turn up. I said I would phone through details. They really want us to eat from the fixed price menu at £15.50 per person. See here http://www.peakpub.co.uk/pages/groupsetmenu
STARTERS
Shared platters of mixed homemade appetizers

MAIN PLATES
Beef and Stilton Pasty with Homemade Chips, Mushy Peas and Gravy
Oak Burger with Smoked Bacon, Blue Cheese and Homemade Chips and Coleslaw
Cajun Chicken Salad with Jalapenos, Tortilla Chips and Sour Cream
Beer Battered Haddock, Homemade Chips, Mushy Peas and Tartar Sauce
Oak Ploughman’s – Local Ham, Cheese, Pate, Chutney, Crusty Bread and Salad
Goat’s cheese and Caramelised Onion Tart with Homemade Chips and Salad
Buttered Salmon and Prawns, Homemade Chips and Salad

You could take your chances and eat from their a-la-carte menu or meals of the day board where prices are around £10-£15 for mains. Nearest takeway of anysort is probably in Buxton.

Please let me know over the next week or so if you want to order from the set menu and what your choice is. I am going for the salmon.

I'll go for set menu b as prefer puddings to starters! I'll go for the Oak Burger and guess I can choose which artery blocking delight on the night?

I'll find out what Ross wants and let you know.

Hopefully not a problem and if you eat any of our starters then your pudding is equally for sharing ;)
