My Lad is actually about to sell his 2002 F650GS and I could get that and bung a 21 inch front wheel on it but the Sertao has longer travel suspension and a few other bits. His bike is probably too good to hack around modification wise and anyway I want him to take responsibility for selling it and not just see me as an easy sale. I'd also potentially have problems insuring a modified bike so might be better with a Sertao or Dakar from the off.

Sounds to me like you know what you want already, I had a Dakar for a couple of years, great bike apart from the soft front end but that's easily fixed.

Possibly... I have dibs on a very low mileage 2 year old one that was bought new for someone's son and has since fallen out of favour (the bike not the lad) and they are looking to recover some of the outlay. Probably newer than I was looking for as an offroader but if I the price is right and I can free up some space in the garage it may well join the fleet.

Everyone needs 5 bikes don't they?

Can I quote you to my wife? I used to have 5 at one time, now I'm back to 3 :(

3...I wish - I get enough comments about the one :(
And for some weird reason (which I don't understand) she's not happy that I need a Landrover, and a car, and the Transalp

Not at all surprised Phil at that price :)

Back to Gordon then, what about a DRZ400S? all the road niceties and perfectly capable off-road as well

I'm waiting for a price for the Sertao just now but there is still something at the back of my head nagging me that I don't really need another bike. Yes it would be great for heading to the north of Englandshire where there are legal trails and I can probably revisit some further away not so legal ones up here. But for the money I'm spending and the amount of use it might get I may be as well hiring a van and bunging the XR400 in the back on the few occasions I need one.

A van wouldn't help with the likes of Austin's jolly in August though as that's a one way trip.

For the same reason as there would be a hundred or so road miles I'm not sure A DR400 would be the answer. I guess cant be that different to the XR400 and that's a pain at much over 30 miles. The 100 to Galloway was about my limit and anyway the bike was complete overkill for the trails there hence why I'm looking for an inbetweenie. I may even just end up selling the XR as my local playgrounds have been made inaccessible now and my mate that used to go on the more extreme stuff with me has emigrated.

One other project in the offing is to get to the most northerly point in Shetland and my mate Farmer Palmer may have something in the planning. No way will the big 1200 adventure make it and I can't see me doing all these road miles to get there on a 400 so again a ruggedised 650 may fit as best of both worlds

Have you thought about an Armstrong, the 350 has an electric boot, it is very rugged and can do road milages with no problem.
