Right first a bit of background.

I'm lucky enough to have a couple of bikes at my disposal but I'm in a bit of a dilemma about a bike off road use.

Firstly I have the BIG R1200GS Adventure.. Yes I can take it off road and yes it's hard work and yes it falls over a lot. Thing is it's just too hard work and without knobblies it's completely hopeless in the soft stuff.

Then I have the XR400. Fabulous off road bike and overkill for just trail riding but most of all it's a pain in the arse getting to the trails. As we don't have many legal trails in Scotland and my local playground has been put out of action by the pit bike boys everything is just too far away to be comfortable.

So what I really need is yet another bike, something in-between. Something that can cover the miles and and when I get there still be light enough to have some fun on the muck. Full knobblies and an electric foot essential. I'm thinking about the G650 Sertao as when I've had a shot of one on the trails it was soo much fun compared to the 1200 which was more a challenge than outright fun. It will fall over a lot so I'm looking for something that could take a bit of a beating and then come back for more.

I did think about buying a van for the XR but on reflection I'd rather have another bike than a van.

So any recommendation?

You are probably on the right lines with a serato, what about a Yam like Austin had xt 660(x?)

Personally, I found my xcountry (650 single) too much like hard work on a run to be enjoyable.
The Transrat was much better but a heavy 'un off road.

Good luck with the search to biking nirvana (which, lets face it doesn't exist!)

Ooh I know exactly what your bike is Phil, I went to have a look at one a few weeks ago. I was suggesting a DRZ as they're a good 'go anywhere' bike.

Missed out on the DR650 I went to see, someone had put a deposit down just a couple of hours before :(

Hi-jack over Gordon :D

J, don't stand for any crap.

Let them know who's boss from the start.
Look her squarely in the eye and say...

Not being a subscriber to UKGSER I have no idea what this is as the photo is blocked.

Assuming it's being sold by a member there is it an ego masturbater? :hitler:

My Lad is actually about to sell his 2002 F650GS and I could get that and bung a 21 inch front wheel on it but the Sertao has longer travel suspension and a few other bits. His bike is probably too good to hack around modification wise and anyway I want him to take responsibility for selling it and not just see me as an easy sale. I'd also potentially have problems insuring a modified bike so might be better with a Sertao or Dakar from the off.

Sounds to me like you know what you want already, I had a Dakar for a couple of years, great bike apart from the soft front end but that's easily fixed.
