Scottish/Northern peeps on Pennine run

Seems a few of us living up north types are heading down for this. Was wondering if anyone wanted to meet up and ride down? I was thinking about heading down Friday morning after rush hour, using the A7 to Carlisle, two junction m/way hop then A6 and off that onto some country lanes through Shap etc eventually ending up at Devils Bridge in Kirkby Lonsdale, haven't decided from there yet!

From Carlsle its around 150 miles, 2h51m according to auto route by M6 etc. That would get us to the place for around 17:30ish.

We're booked in for food at 20:30 I believe, be good to get there 19:30ish latest to get stuff off bikes into barns. That leaves 2 hours for nadgery lanes. Could combine lanes and some motorway. If you managed to get away earlier could do more rural roads.

I tend to set my satnav with avoid motorways or shortest route so the route is partially known by me to Devils Bridge, I'll have a look from there and see what's roughly southish heading. If time catches up just jump on motorway.

Right its going to be 2.30 before I can leave home so we could meet at m6 jn 42.
How about ride to m6 jn 36, then a65 to skipton, then on to keighley, denholme, brighouse, huddersfield, holmfirth, glossop then Bamford? 4 Hours, plus stops etc, 160 miles. Say 5 hours which would get us there about half 7. I don't have a sat nav, but I do know this route roughly. Pretty much avoids motorways and large towns. You could program your sat nav just in case.
What you recon?

A65 on a Friday? Are you mad!!! I used to live in Huddersfield so know the A629?Holmfirth etc well, mostly 40's and 30's now :( . Used to drive to Keighley almost every day as we had a depot there!

I've come south on the A6 from Carlisle and after High Hesket turned off the main road and let the satnav guide me, the road kinda weaves under and over the M6, through Tebay then over the M6 and up a long hill near a chocolate museum or something like that. Brings you out eventually in Kirkby Lonsdale, there you can cross the A65 and looks like there are some rural roads there. Personally would rather do motorway at the end if we have to make up time. I'm not the fastest rider but I can get a move on if I have to.

If you go via Holmfirth and Glossop you will be riding back that way on Saturday. Getting to Derbyshire from the north via a nice route is almost impossible. I have spent hours plotting a route the weaves though the Manchester to Leeds metropolis and its difficult. That's why I favour the M6 to Junction 20, then it's busy A roads through to Buxton but you do get to ride the cat and fiddle pass.

From Kirby Lonsdale if you want back roads head to Ingelton, high Bentham, slaidburn then clitheroe. I would just nip down the A59 to Preston and pick up the M6 or M61.

Good luck

Haha, no not mad, just trying to help. You appeared to be looking for inspiration for a roughly south ish route from KL avoiding motorways, that's what I came up with. The a65 will be busy, but I think everywhere will on a Friday afternoon, particularly as we head towards Leeds/manc area. I'm happy to follow your sat nav though. Just don't really fancy having anything to do with the m60/m61/m62 in the rush hour on Friday if I'm honest.

Austin is pretty much bang on, there isn't really any decent route route through Preston/Mancs etc. I'll sit down with a proper map and see what I can come up with. M60/61 builds up from 15:30 on a friday, Similar for the A65, which means we would pass through Halifax/Huddersfield at rush hour. More than one way to skin a cat as they say. Got 3 weeks to decide, which means panic on the morning of departure naturally!!

Plus, on the A65 there could be a chance of bumping into Hudders, and going by his reputation thats not a good thing I hear

Sorta got a route planned out. From M6 j42, computer says 3h 58m and 159 miles. Mileage is probably right. timewise we've got an hour to play with.

Roughly from J42 through High Hesket, left at some point, great Salked, Culgaith,Kings Meaburn,Tebay then Devils bridge.

From there Lower Bentham, Sawley, Sabden, short hop on M65, then through Holme Chapel, Walsden, Milnrow, Delph, Stalybridge, edge of Glossop, Buxton then Edale.

Looked at it on Microsoft Autoroute, will have to try and transfer it on to Tomtom. Probably just have to manually mark points on the satnav whilst following route on computer screen.

What do you think?

Mmm, autoroute says first leg 1h9, tomtom 1h47 for similar mileage, second leg autoroute says 2h49, tomtom says 3h37. 1h26m difference overall! Guess we'll have to see who's right!

Converted route from .axe file to .itn for the tomtom but the tomtom didn't follow the route, why wont technology behave itself? If it did then my GS would be a reliable bike!

The route I will be following on Saturday goes Edale, Bamford, Glossop, Holmfirth, Delph, Upper Mill, Denshaw, Upper Mill, Ripponden, Hebden Bridge, Haworth, Colne then yorks dales. Just thought I would mention it in case you wanted to avoid riding the same roads twice.

Right Mark, how about meet at Golden Fleece Services on Jn 42 M6 as soon after 2.30 as possible? Could easily be 2.45 as I have to wait for wife to get home from work, but I'll have a stern word with her friday am, and will get there as soon as I possibly can.
I'll be the one on the r/w/b africa twin dressed like a rozza!
