Today Monday 11th January 2016
I took the new CRF 1000L Africa Twin out for a brief road test courtesy of Smiths Honda of Chester. Tel: 01244 336 565

After having the initial brief on the DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission) system, and the different settings of Automatic, Manual or Sports mode I set off for my run down the A41 towards Broxton.
Setting off on a brand new bike with only 63 miles on the clock was slightly scary, but I pulled away as smooth as you like, very quickly and smoothly moving up the gears without any snatching which I was expecting it to do.

The Riding position is very similar to my RD07 a good commanding view all round, with the combined digital speedo and rev counter easy to see and read, the other display such as time elapsed, etc needed a bit to get used too, after all I only had a hour to experience the New Africa Twin !

The one I sat on at the Bike Show in November 2015 had a lowered seat option which is slightly narrower.

The model I had, didn't have heated grips, big hand brush guards so very quickly my hands were getting a wee bit cold, which are Honda "extras" I was told later.
I then started to right thumb into Manual Mode whilst left finger and thumbing through the gears with swift and positive effect, then later tried Sports Mode which was fun.

The suspension felt smooth and comfortable throughout my ride as I took the twisty back roads from Broxton through the villages of Tattenhall, Huxley and Waverton which today went through a flooded road with no problems either.

Getting used to the Manual Mode by now I was using the Manual Mode (DCT) on this part of the ride which was easy to use and very smooth, seemed strange not using a clutch lever and gear change pedal, I'm assuming is this the future ?

Anyway my ride back to Smiths Honda of Chester was a very enjoyable experience indeed riding the new Africa Twin, which to sum up in a few words is quite difficult, but I did have a big smile on my face at the end.

Thankyou.

Good stuff Stubbsie. :thumbsupanim: How on earth did you manage to blag that then? :respect:

You must be one the first in the country to ride the new AT - there will be some very jealous people out there with deposits down on new one's who feel they should have been first in the queue. Nice one. :D

Our local dealers has one. I've had a bit of a play on it but couldn't ride it because I was in the car. They offers me a test ride whenever I like.

Lots of questions to answer !

Here goes, I didn't have to blag a ride there's 44 Honda dealers with these for test riding the chap at Smiths Honda in Chester told me this morning.
I booked the test ride last Monday, but the bike only arrived on Saturday 2 days ago.
I'm the only second chap to ride it today, he's the only dealer to get the Black one as everyone wants the Tricolour White ones.

Ergonomics question Steve, very comfortable, it has the standard seat not the lowered one as used at the Bike Show in November, clear instrumentation, I think round mirrors would be better, heated grip are an "extra" this demo didn't have them fitted or the bigger hand/brush guards.
No main stand fitted "extra", road tyres fitted so no "off road" riding done although I was about to ride down a farm type tack then realised "Ah road tyres !" promptly stopped.
Good riding position, would be better with a bigger screen another "extra" DCT system, very interesting concept never used one before but easy to pick up and use., I used Automatic, Manual and Sports modes.
It's very smooth and responsive, it was strange to ride a bike without a clutch lever and gear lever although the gear lever is an "extra" too.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience to be shared amongst us all, I did ride ride back with a BIG smile even thought it was a tad cold this morning.
It made me realise what a good bike my AT XRV 750 RD07 is and what I ride is still cool without the witchcraft the new CBF 1000L has.
I'm sure it will sell well and will be interesting to read other reviews that have a road riding bias compared to the journo's view of the AT's off road capabilities, as we don't ALL ride off road do we ?

I hope this has answered a few questions, but get out there and book a ride there's 44 out there waiting for you !
