Tourists groan

The first of the campervans are starting to arrive on Skye. They hired ones are worst so not experienced drivers, you would not believe the pickles they get themselves into. And on single track roads too.
Expect even more of them this year with no covid.

Makes travel by car very arduous but makes for a target rich environment on the bike.[emoji38]

A lot of "well the satnav told us to go up there" I suppose...

Plenty of roads around there that feel slightly tight on a bike, even. :D

I got stuck behind a camper van on Sunday on some minor roads. Right pita followed it for miles it seemed. 71 plate vehicle so either a newbie or a rental but fluck-me he couldn’t drive it. Dead slow, either going too wide on corners or not going wide enough so nearly scraping one or other of the sides on the hedge, no idea of the width of the thing : one minute brushing the near side hedge, the next yards away. Too unpredictable to pass on the narrow lanes. A couple of cars came the other way and both times the driver just stopped blocking the road and waited for the cars to back up into a gap. Meanwhile would he/she move over a foot or two to let me and another bike past. Nope, I don’t think he even looked in his mirrors. I eventually squeezed past while he waited for another car to reverse. I sensed him jump out his skin as I drew level with the cab and gave it a big handful to clear the lumpen vehicle. Muppet. I suppose the driver will learn eventually.

He will have been that focused on the road ahead he won't have even known you were there. That's scary when you think about it because had he even attempted to reverse to let one of those cars through he'd have not thought twice about just going and hitting you.

Ha, there was a campervan trying to reverse up my drive last year. They can't physically fit.
So he got stuck.
I went out to help.
Front wheels were in a hole by now so put some gravel in and got him pointing the right way.
Well he let the clutch out but the wheels just spun. I could not work it out.
Put some more gravel in.

Hang on a min, what would stop you moving.

I said, "have you got the hand brake on buddy"

"Yep" he said.

Slowly I replied, "it would move better with it off"

"Ok" he said.

Drove out.

Its like the goon show. (For the older ones)
But you can get the whole lot on bbc sounds if you are interested.

Take a deep breath and re laaaax dahling :D
They are a pain and imho, shouldn't be allowed to hire one unless they can at least reverse the fekker out of the hire centre.
I think the ones that are seasoned campers generally give way or at least pull over if they see a large convoy behind.
I was going up the Beallach some time ago on the bike and watched this fekin half wit stranded on one of the hills, he tried reversing and I swear I thought he was going to cope it over the edge.
I got off the bike and literally had to guide him out.
Word of thanks ??? nah just carried on wombling through the remaining bends.:(

Take a chill pill Rick :p
