What is this?

Anyone any idea? I bought it at a car jumble or bike jumble. When you wind the handle the clamps come together like a vice but they both move.
I thought it would be adaptable to secure the front wheel when the bike is on the lifting bench but never used it.
The seller had no idea what it was when I bought it either. Having a shed tidy so I thought I would ask.

The shape on the ends look like they are designed to compress or crush. But what!

Thats a very good sugestion. The clamping bits follow a curve that would match the citcle of a wheel. Rear tyre of the @ is due to be replaced soon. New one on the shelf allready. Be great if that is what it is.

Think it could be for making timber window frames, holding the two or three sections together whilst the glue sets ??? dunno , anybody else ?

I have been wondering when someone with knowlege and intelligence would eventually come along and clear up the conundrum by drawing on their vast knowlege and experience of tools, equipment and their use.
So I would really like to say a heartfelt thanks for their contribution.

Unfortunatly they havent come along yet so there is no one to thank yet. :thumbsupanim:

Judging by the shape of the two blue arms, it must be to compress something. My first impression is that it's a coil spring compressor, as Hudders and AJ said. I'm puzzled because surely such a device would need to compress at least two sides of a coil, three for safety. (And if you used two or three simultaneously the handles would interfere.)

Also what puzzles me is that the lengthy threaded section at the opposite end from the handle looks too long to fit under a car wing. Maybe it's for use on a truck?

Or maybe it's a cure for big-heads?

Right, a closer look at the blue arms suggests there are three: one on the end nearer the handle and two at the other end. The one nearer the handle doesn't line up with either of the two at the other end; this suggests they break or crack or disturb something. Also the two aren't in a straight line; so the "something" is curved, and that the device goes on the inside of the curve.

All of this helps not one jot...

You are right with the detailed analysis. After the spring compressor sugestions I did start googling leaf spring compressors. The single arm to keep the bolt that holds the leaves together and the two arm end to allow a spanner on the nut but I think not, as the arms are curved as you pointed out.

Still the hunt goes on.

That's what I thought at first, but it just looked too big to be a thingummyjig...
I suppose that on reflection, it may well be the smaller relation though - a regular old Thingy?
