Damn Jobsworth MOT Test Mechanic...

Car failed the MOT yesterday:

--- Registration plate fitted to the rear does not have black characters on a yellow background [6.3.2b]----

Same goes for the front.

Now I have certainly seen 3 previous MOTs with no problem at all and I imagine the previous owner even more. Is it just me or are they being a bit bloody picky? I see boy racers cutting around all the time with italicized characters in weird fonts. Never seen one pulled over and cautioned by the police for having illegal plates fitted.

yes seems a bit picky but was it a MOT tester and station you know well, or they may even have been an inspector from the ministry lurking in the area

I don't know them well as i'm fairly new to the area. Booked via Kwik Fit for Autospeed Chippenham.

yes they have to be careful if strangers come in ,My Brother in law has an MOT garage , and if someone unknown bring in a car he is always suspicious of the ministry planting some faults to test him

Am I the only one seeing that it does have black characters on a yellow background? Why did he fail it?

The name Kwikfit reminds me of the time I pulled in to a Kwikfit on my 35 mile commute to work. A recently fitted exhaust (not fitted by them) had started rattling and blowing and I didnt fancy the journey home with the problem.
They told me that I needed a complete new system as the wole thing had failed. I declined, carried on to work and faffed about with some twisted coat hangers as a temporary fix for the journey home and re tightened a clamp that evening when I got home. That was all it was. The exhaust lasted at least another five years till I sold the car.
The point being that I wonder if the just happened to supply new number plates?

Ps, just stick a thin strip of black tape over the offending grey lines for now! Then take it to a different, non franchised garage in future.

+1 Traveller. If Kwikfit told me rain is wet, I'd ask for a second opinion.

Years ago I took an old Metro in for a back box, and when it was up on the ramps they came in with solemn faces telling me the front pads and disks were knackered. I told them I'd sort it out myself, which I did 80,000 miles later.

Lying barstewards......

They caught a friend of mine many years ago......
He'd gone in for,i think, an MOT. Must have spotted the child seat in the car and gave him the full
" As a family man you must always put your kids' safety uppermost, and your shock absorbers are pat their best: it would be best to replace them before they cause an accident!"
routine.
As I recall, he came away with a much lighter wallet and 4 new tyres, 4 new shockers .... and a little wiser to the "tricks of the trade".

It's not solid black. There's a thin grey line running through the middle of the characters.

Ahhh... Doesn't really show on this works computer.

black paint over the thin grey line , yes Kwikfit ore the likes told my old man his Marina front shocks where gone once, they where new genuine leyalnd parets fitted by the local garage only 3 weeks before ,( Lever arm shocks not telescopic ) the old man said pull the other one it has got bells on, and said they where only fitted 3 weeks ago , the guy said no seriously they are gone , take it back to the garage that fitted them in that case , so he did , Keith bounced on the front of the cat declared the shocks NBG , Phoned local leyalnd main dealer that had supplied shocks , and told them they where supplying and fitting the next set themselves FOC because he was not doing it again , and they better be right , and they did it
