Just back from Austria. Did 2500 miles in 8 days. Keith on tiger 800xc, Sam on gtr1400, Pete on dl1000, myself on crf1000l.
Day 1. Home to Dover, Dover Calais ferry, Calais to F1 hotel near Strasbourg.
Day 2. Strasbourg, across Germany into Austria. Destination was an apartment in Steeg on Hallstattersee, not far from Saltzburg.
Day 3. Some local passes in Dachstein, Salzkammergut.
The AT
Typical corner
Stone-age foundations at 1200m
Fossilised bike
Day 4. Grossglockner, plus 5 hours riding to get there and back. We did it north to south and back,
with the detour up the dead-end where the view to the mountain itself is found.
Day 5. Bit of an easier day - late start and early finish, more local passes. Followed by a bit of exploring.
Day 6. Toured around 3 or 4 of the local lakes and did a spot of swimming.
Day 7. Back to Strasbourg.
Day 8. Back home via Calais.
Notes:
AT fuel consumption was interesting - got as much as 80 mpg when pootling around the lakes. 65mpg on mountain roads. Dropped to 39.5mpg on last leg up to Calais, using a tank of U95 E10 ethanol cr@p. Rewarded with U97 in Dover, then 53 mpg at high cruising speed on last leg.
Events:
AT rear puncture on autoroute at 7am on day 8. Tubed tyres. I had a can of tyre weld stuff, a small pump, and roadside assistance cover, but no levers or tubes. So used Keith's electric pump and limped off at next junction to find nearest garage. Into nearest village of Freming-Merlebach (1km) where to my astonishment there was a main franchise Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki dealer. Sent 2 off to Old Mcdonald's for breakfast, sat it out until shop opened, got tyre fixed. 3 hours lost. Phoned ferry company, paid admin fees to get tickets changed, hit the road again. Splash and dash stops made up the time so we still got home before darkness set in. 900km day.
