How slow can you go?

Those of you who were at the XRV National in Norfolk a couple of years back will remember the slow race we had there, run by Nick from the Thetford Safari and ATR Forum. I have taken this idea on and ran a competition at the BMF last weekend using an AJP 125 supplied by Moto Gymkhana on a Z-shaped course.

It proved too tough a challenge for many (many of whom had said how easy it would be). Only one in four riders (25%) actually got round the course without crossing the perimeter line or putting their feet down. But many who did achieve it had to have more than one go so only 22% of attempts were successful. And that was with me letting them off if they failed in the first leg and not counting it.

The best time at the end of Saturday was 57 seconds. This remained unbeaten until a chap called James Fisher came along and smashed it, clocking up 1 minute 21 seconds. Later on, people could not believe it so I invited James back and he did it again taking even longer (1min 22secs). Just as we were clearing away he suggested he have an attempt at 2 minutes and only just failed (1m 55s).

The idea is to have these races around the country using whatever bikes you have that can get round the course, not only for the local competitive fun but to see who has the best time nationally for each type of bike. I will organise one at the National meet in September.

Hmm, I think that there's been a bit of a mix up over the times here Chris.

If I tried to ride that slowly, I'd have fallen off within the first couple of seconds! Well done James

I suppose you could say he's earned his stripes  :zebra:

I reckon, I could do a minute, but I could only do it sitting on the bike. I did try standing but I stalled it every time. I had the advantage, of course, of being able to do it every time there was a lull, or to try to an attract those wondering how easy it was to have a go. That meant I probably had a dozen or so goes over the two days. I reckon I could do it slower on my own bike - but I have no evidence for that claim.

indeed. changed.

Try again :)

I didn't like to say. Well, not after the initial moan. :D

For the record I've no idea how I'd do on such a slow riding race, but I suspect not very well. ;)

I'm still knackered from being stood up in the sunshine all weekend. I think I have corrected it now.

Big Thanks, though, to MPJ who turned up and helped on Sunday. I had BMF stewards on Saturday, but they never showed up on Sunday so I could not have managed without her.

It's a shame she wasn't tall enough to get on the 125 and have a go herself. :p

Well done to James indeed. I observed a few attempts and it was certainly no easy feat. And no, of course I didn't have a go - there was no way I'd be able to get my leg over that bike...

Enjoyed the event, though, and came away with a new jacket and boots at ridiculously low prices. Chris scooped up a new jacket and trousers.

Only down side was observing a crash requiring emergency ambulance in the warm-up to the side car racing. I hope it all came good in the end. Those guys are crazy! :eekicon: :sidecar:

I saw Sidecar Enduro once (30ish years ago). Oooh ! Totally bonkers. :sidecar: Even the solo enduro riders thought the sidecar boys were nuts :eekicon:

An incredible display of machine control. Reckon you should come to Squires Café near Leeds & ask folk to test their skills. It has a big enough car park :)

Yes he was.

You're welcome Wheelie, although I still maintain if you'd caught the bike when I wanted to stop I could have ridden it :D

It would be interesting to see what time Mudwiz would achieve doing this :idea-013:

Ask the cafe if you can organise it there. I can provide everything you need (stopwatch, map of course, tape measure, chalk etc). The local BMF should help. I'll come up if I can.
