From the Beeb - Is car technology creating stupid drivers?

Well, in a word - yes. A quote from the article - "Drivers relying solely on their navigational systems to get from here to there could be abandoning both spatial awareness and common sense." Sound familiar?

Definitely. On the few times I use sat nav to guide me to a destination I always feel more lost than if I have worked it out for myself. I also know several people - youngsters mostly - who ALWAYS put their destination in the sat nav, and I know coz I have asked that they don't have a clue where places are. For example the Trafford Centre in Manchester is easy to find - just off J10 of the M60 yet one my son's friends simply hasn't got a clue where it is or how to get there without the nav.

This thread actually makes me wonder how on earth I found my way driving around before satnav! I guess street plans / A-Z booklets.

I must confess that I still tend to use satnavs today - not necessarily to tell me where to go but to give me a rough idea of arrival time and to highlight traffic problems.

Yeah, that. I'm fairly sure I know where my office is without the 'nav, but I even do that on the commute.

It varies. It's a useful tool if you don't let it take over everything. Or even if you do:

One of my usage modes is on a trip, put my intended destination for the day in the satnav, no motorways and shortest distance, and watch it say I'll be there at quarter past noon. Then make it stretch till 5 pm or thereabouts by ducking into every little interesting looking single track road I see. :D I will have no idea whatsoever where I've been, I can look that up later. However I will also see roads I normally wouldn't have if I were doing this with a paper map. It is a fun way to see the country, even if you do sometimes end up all the way up a logging track in the Brecon Beacons.

Technology may be making drivers more stupid, but my boots are reshaping their doors quite well too.

If you ask, I've probably got the car door mirror you want too. What colour was that?
