Insurance documents question

Here's one for our very own Whealie, but I'll ask it anyway as I'm sure that it will impact on others.

When I renewed my insurance in late December I did not get a set of proper, in-your-hand paper documents but an encrypted email version. I'm fine with this, but what are the implications of being asked to provide "original" documents? Do I just wave a USB stick under the copper's nose, or what? Not that I've been naughty of late, of course.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

I think its part of the on line revolution. They check with the database, no need for a producer. As with the new tax disk (or not). No longer need to display as they confirm the details via the numberplate.

I was just thinking about abroad.

I usually take all my details (or a copy of) if going over the water in case I'm asked to produce.

In theory there is no need at all for them as they an all be checked online. The MIB (Motor Insurers Bureau) in the UK runs the MID (Motor Insurance Database). The only issue would be if your insurer had failed to notify the MID that you were insured, but if you check this yourself first you will be fine.

European countries (EU and others) all operate something similar so the MIB is the UK body on the green card scheme and gets to check overseas insurance here and UK insurance for overseas enforcement officers. In theory you do not need a green card anymore.

I'd stick a copy of your insurance doc somewhere you can get it just in case - copy on your phone or in a Dropbox folder. Some countries have different requirements, including carrying V5 or equivalent I think. Some also insist on carrying a high viz jacket in case of accident.

Ta for the replies chaps.

I carry a copy of the certificate of insurance on the bike anyway. I was just wondering what would be the score with producing "the original". I believe in some countries all the relevant documents must be carried AND be originals. But I'll be blowed if I'm going to go around with the original of the registration document.

I was not sure about how insurance is checked in another country - I'm in the Republic of Ireland. If it goes through the MIB then fair enough.

Of course, it goes without saying, that if I'm not naughty then I won't be asked to produce. ;)

A word to the wise do not trust your insurer to pass on the details to the MIB. It was your luck that i found out that they had not been notified some 3 months after I had renewed my policy.

I was not at all impressed i can tell you
