PIAA Bulbs

ANd looking at the reviews they are a bit of a rip off. They are not white because they are brighter rather they are white because the glass has a blue hue that strips out some of the yellow so in reality you get less light. They also run hotter. They may make you more visible due to the colour difference but not much else

Basically if you work on the premise that energy cannot be destroyed it can only be converted so if they use the same power and get hotter than a regular lamp then that heat energy must come at the expense of something else and as heat and light are the only real outputs from a lamp it must therefore come from the light output.so therefore must be dimmer.

The only way to increase luminance is to increase the wattage of the bulb but then the wiring will run hotter and the fuse amperage may be insufficient and it will blow - some headlight is better than none. Whenever I see 'deals' like this on the internet for some reason this 'toon always springs up in the back of my mind

Those are expensive bulbs for a supposed 40% light increase.

Halfords will sell you one of their own Extreme Brilliance lamps at £16.99 with up to 90% more light (they're not bulbs - they go in the ground and turn into daffodils and the like :) ) or the Bosch Plus 90% lamp at £18.99.

But, you pays your money and you makes your choice.

Thanks all, trying to get better light out of the beemer, feedback on HID on the beemer is not favorable, so will go down replacing the stock bulbs.

Halfrauds it is ......

If the headlight is a bit feeble I'd try checking other things first such as connections, earthing, batt condition, alternator and especially regulator. It doesn't sound to me that replacing the bulb is going to cure your problem??

I wonder is PIAA are resting on laurels: they made their name with lighting for rally cars in the post-Cibie Super Oscar era. I think that the PIAA lights had rather better optics than most of the opposition at the time, and made the best use of the 100-150W halogen bulbs then in vogue (pre-EEC regulations).
Nowadays all quality bulbs of a given wattage are much of a muchness, so paying way over the odds for PIAA bulb is likely to be a waste of money. If lighting is still poor after checking connections etc as Nigel says, adding additional lights is probably the only way to go (particularly given the dubious legality of HID kit!)

I put a setof Osram bulbs in the Varadero a few years back which were brighter and they are brighter but they also have a downside. The internal reflector in the bulb must be a different shape as my low beam is now much shorter and wider but my high beam is far longer and slightly narrower field of light

Very true. Used to do 70 miles a day back and fore to work. Great in summer, daylight both ways but winter was a nightmare.
Lots of things hidden by darkness and even good lighting will only give you a minimal increase in reaction time at high speeds
and wet tarmac after dark, is almost impossible to illuminate properly.

Osama Nightbreakers are very good. I run them in the cars and the bike and spend a lot of time driving around the lanes here at night. Really very good, and at about £15 a pair the price isn't too bad either
