Well, shit.

That starter motor isn't supposed to look like that, I can assure you.

Looks like I'm walking for the foreseeable future... :(

Cause? Pinion throw-out adjustment of solenoid wrong? Seized bearing bush at the end of the pinion"cover"? Have you taken the starter off yet, and if so, is there other damage-to the ring gear for example? Nasty whatever, and you have my sympathy :(

Yeah it's got a kickstarter. They're also known for being near-impossible to kickstart, and mine has some slight mixture issues still. So that's a no then. ;)

I know there was some play on the starter bolts. My theory is that it loosened up a bit and grabbed it tooth on tooth, forcing itself to pieces. The flywheel is looking a bit rough, though not too bad. Should still be usable with a new motor and after fixing those bolt holes. Which is the big one...

Tomorrow's predicted to be 20 degrees. Bugger!

That's a bummer,I wouldn't know what we're lookin' at here as I've never really looked at a BM motor before. If you say it's a shi**er ,then I'll believe you. :(

Oh well it'll keep you busy. ;)

I'm sure I read somewhere it is the same unit as a Citroen 2CV6. Of course that may be rubbish and the 2CV starter although cheaper is probably just as hard to source as the BMW one.

Right in the center of the picture, that big diagonal crack isn't supposed to be there.

Anyway. Getting a new starter isn't that big a deal, this one's a loaner anyway while my starter was being repaired under warranty. You can buy 'em new no problem, or indeed fish one out of a French car.

I'm mostly worried about those bolt holes. Fixing it properly will probably involve drilling them out and putting a sleeve or whatever in, and they're not the most accessible things in the world. Might have to take the engine out and/or apart to properly get at them...

It's lasted well though - look on the bright side!

Hope you get it sorted before summer

Is there any change of using a "next size up" fatter bolt? I suppose it depends how much, and in what shape, the holes in the engine block have been worn. It would, I imagine, involve drilling out the flanges on the starter itself, but that's got to be easier than attacking the engine :eekicon:

They're gone oval, it seems. I've thought about one size bigger as being the easiest option, but then the starter will still sit higher than it should.

I've even thought about drilling and tapping a small M6 hole straight down against the starter bolts, but there's not enough meat for that. ;)

Best plan so far I'm afraid is to stick it on a trailer and let the experts sort it. Will cost a bit, but then again it'll be done properly and I need this bike to be reliable (well, as reliable as it can be) in a months time.

Batavierenrace.

There's about 150ish bikers doing traffic control and whatnot, mostly guarding intersections, protecting runners from friday night drivers and farmers and vice versa. I'm part of the supplies-team, making sure those people get food & drinks throughout the night, which means making coffee and pancakes somewhere out there during the night and distributing them enroute. You'd like it, it involves strapping lots of odd things to the bike. :D

Here's a few impressions over the years:

The Pancaker: Fold-out wooden box with four petrol stoves in it. And an Elephant that was crazy loud and needed to be push started.

Yours Truly on the old Dominator, with a pur foam lined cooking pot on the back to keep the pancakes hot:

I've done this event once with a busted starter motor, never again. That was when the bike was pretty much stock and would actually start on the kicker if you insisted. It was allright when the engine was hot, but the next morning on a stone cold engine was rough. Kick kick kick kick kick kick kick kick kick pant pant pant... Then some smartarse walks up, "can I have a go?" "Sure mate knock yourself out" Kick kick broaah. Bastard. "Always had Nortons" he said...

Sure. How soon can I expect it back fixed? ;)

(I really need a garage though. And it does get taken care of, just not that much cosmetically... And it is getting on a bit. Nearly 188000 km now.)

It's at the menders now. Airhead boxer specialist, scratching his head saying he's never seen anything like it before. Great. Thinks maybe the flywheel is dodgy. The teeth certainly are a bit rounded by now, might have to replace that anyway. I just hope it doesn't go as far as replacing the block...

Trailered the bloody thing over. First time with a trailer, that's hard work, they drag the arse end of your car all over the place. :eekicon: Won't help either that it was a kinda sloppy rental trailer... Empty was even worse. Crazy washboard-like vibrations between 70 and 100 km/h. Speed limit for trailers is 90. ;)

And ofcourse now that the bike is out of action and will be for a while, the weather's getting springy and all kinds of new parts are showing up. Meanwhile I'm going nuts commuting by train. Bollocks.

Would now be a good time to approach the wife with the age old tried and tested "See if i would have another bike....." :D

I'd love to get another dominator on the side sometime, but apart from practical considerations (parked on the street, etc) I'm afraid this latest development is going to cost enough as it is.
