Well, would you......

A heading with 'well would you' I was expecting more interesting pics than that Austin ;)

Oh dear, oh dear. That little darling growing inside V keeping you at bay is it? :D

The river was about 12"-18" deep with gravel in the shallows but rocky in the deep bits.

Walk in first, check for any big boulders, pick your line and go for it. Doesn't look that bad from here but I can't see the bottom.

Well, I only had my ankle boots on and paddled in a little way. As I said gravel on the in and out ramp but big round slippery rocks in 12-18" of water in most of the middle (esp where the riffles are). I didn't bother in the end as I could just see myself hitting one of the big rocks sliding to an unbalanced halt and unable to go back or forwards. I have been across in my 4x4 a few years ago and I put the diff lock in just in case and it certainly fely like it needed it, so its very slippery in the middle.

As I once had fish someone out of about a 7ft deep river......be careful....but does look ok for Bob to go first :thumbsupanim:

Would you ride across? On your own!

You need to get yourself one of these

very usefull to check ot the depth of the water and helping in picking up your bike if things go pear shaped :D

Mmmmm, had the same issue last weekend. Came across a ford that was running full tilt after some snow melt water, decide to turn round. I'll go back later in the summer, cross it ok,but not on my own ;)

There's a ford over the Nairn way, John may know it? I took my Crosstourer through it on my maiden journey on my new £11.5K bike, DAMN! I so nearly ended on my arse!
It wasn't that deep, but that green slime is like ice! It was pretty !umpy as well, must see if I can find the PIC I took! Watch those fords, especially solo.

Mmm, fords...

The only time I get to do proper fording at home is when something's gone seriously wrong with the weather. Such as this:

Yerrrrs, IKWYM Jim... Its the sneaky, small but dangerous 6" boulder that catches the front wheel unexpectedly thats the bugger. I took Bimbler@xrv (paul) for a test ride of his new (to him) DRZ400 around Shropshire on Thursday, cracking day and the lanes were perfect as were the B roads, however the couple of river fords were dealt with by a tootle across the adjacent footbridge. I KNOW that the rocks bite in the River Onny... I have seen the sad effect of a drowned DR350 and the equally bedraggled rider, and that was in high summer. ;)

The solution is to always have an enduro rider along who will always be willing to test a crossing after a tempting, "Nah, no way I would cross that ford.., although Mad Bazza did it last week on his back wheel....", and wait for the competitive instincts to kick in!

EEEEM Yip after having a look first. BMW are made for water and mud like Spaniels.
