Have you got a link to that particular battery?

Is it this one?

One thing to bear in mind is that some battery chargers are not suitable for these batteries.

yep that's the one, thank you Lutin. I checked the measurements and it seems to be the right fit......

Doing a bit more reading, these batteries are not a fan of the cold. All batteries suffer from a fall off in performance as the temperature drops, but these suffer more than most.

The important thing is that the ability of providing the high current (to start the bike) really falls off as the temperature drops. Warm the battery up (or don't let it get too cold in the first place) and it will perform more like it should.

There’s been a lot of discussion about lithium batteries on ukgser. A lot of people are big fans of them as they hold their charge for a long time. This is, as far as I can see, their biggest and main advantage. The other is weight saving, although hardly worth it on a 250kg bike. If you use the bike regularly enough to keep the battery charged or can put a battery charger on it then I personally don’t think they are worth it.

The cold start thing apparently is helped by letting the battery discharge a little before hitting the starter, eg a light on for a minute or two, this starts the chemical processes in the battery and warms it internally. More cold cranking amps magically then become available it seems.

thank you all guys.......food for thoughts as a) weight is not an issue (with me sitting on a Varadero, I am sure the suspensions won't benefit from a lighter battery that much:) , b) my bike sleeps outside every night, under cover, but gets used every day, 5 or 6 days a week for a 20/30 miles commute........so not too sure if the extra few bob are really worth it......

Genuine Yuasa Tone...how boring am I! If you are really keen do it every 5 years before performance starts to drop off.

You sure you don't have Scottish blood circulating in your veins Paul???

As has been said, you'd be better off saving pennies and not ounces - get yerself a decent brand of lead-acid battery. Yuasa or Motobat - both good brands :)

Just my tuppence worth
