Sleeping Mat for "owd fella"!

I am looking long and hard at one or other of the Outwell mats, anyone got any experience with the 7.5cm or 10cm mats please? Dreamcatcher is a lot cheaper, but the new Dreamboats do look really nice!!

I am drawn to the the thicker 10cm mat for improved comfort over the thin SIM's which are literally, a PITA for me!! I usually prefer an airbed but they can be cold things unless you use extra layers under the bag. I found the aluminium foam mat things brilliant under a bag, but they can get sweaty...

An XL airbed and pump, decent 3 season bag and pillow all fit nicely in a drysack, and a SIM will be a bit more bulky, especially the 70cm wide babies, but comfort really can be worth the hassle... :)

A good sleep is worth everything. You can deal with all the sh"t when you had a decent sleep. Go for the most comfortable one

What he said, and as I posted on ABR Exped Downmats are the best.

Yep, as Austin says Exped air mats. We have the synmat's which are great fot general/uk conditiond the Downmat's are obviously warmer when it's colder (and more expensive....), comfy & available in thicker & fatty sizes.
We have however had a few go porus but have been changed without quibble (5yr warranty)

The only thing which puts me off the expad mat is the noise the make. Listened to Hudders on his, sounded like he was wrestling with a rubber sexdoll :eekicon: :D

Another vote for the Exped.

If the mat goes porous Exped will replace it.

Cheers all. Lots of support about for the Exped and over on ABR several votes for the Outwell mats. I am going to pop to the local camping suppliers and see what they have in stock and try a few out :) I do like the compact nature of the Exped when rolled up I have to say!

As I found out when I stayed at Phil's place, the mat made no noise at all on carpet. So I think the squeaky noises are caused by the mat moving on the tent groundsheet, the answer to the "rubber doll" effect would be to put something like a microfiber sheet underneath the mat, something I will try when I next go camping. :thumbsupanim:

After a lot of looking and pondering of mats and a check of the finances, I have finally ended up with a Thermarest Mondoking, allegedly an XXL mat, but no wider than my old airbed.

10cm of supafoam comfort will I hope, contribute to some good nights sleep this year. It's a tight squeeze in my Khyam Biker tent and would be of no use to those with dinky 1/2 man tents!! Two valves so will hopefully be no slower to prepare or pack than any other beds. Fitting it in my drybag might be an issue..... ;)

Last year at the national I spent the first night shivering with the amount of alcohol supped thinning my blood. Thanks to Pete and Debs who lent me their spare bag I survived the weekend. This year I'm taking 2 sleeping bags and I'm on the market for an Exped U7 mat this should do the trick. Has anyone seen any good deals going or where is the best place to get one. I called in all the hiking/camping shops at Ambleside and bowness and they all say they can't get hold of them. Any ideas
Cheers Mike
